The money tree, also known as Zamioculcas zamiifolia, is deeply loved by people in our country because it symbolizes “wealth rolling in.” So how do you grow a money tree so it has lush branches and leaves? How should you prune it so it grows well?

1. How to grow a money tree so it has lush branches and leaves?

A money tree generally does not need much special care and is a very easy green plant to grow. For specific care, you only need to pay attention to the following aspects.

1. Potting soil preparation

If you bought it from a flower wholesale market, it is recommended to have it potted and planted properly in the flower shop before taking it home. Of course, for flower enthusiasts, preparing the potting soil yourself is naturally more interesting.

For reference: mix peat soil, garden soil and river sand in a 1:1:1 ratio, and apply cake fertilizer as a base fertilizer in the prepared potting soil.

2. Planting the money tree

You can directly transplant a whole money tree seedling, or grow it by sowing seeds and cuttings.

(1) Direct transplanting

Direct transplanting is relatively simple. First take out half of the potting soil, then place the plant in the very center of the pot, cover it with soil, and water thoroughly.

(2) Growing from seed

After buying money tree seeds, soak them in warm water and germinate them, then sow them directly in the soil. This method has a relatively long growing cycle, is generally not very suitable for home growing, and is more suitable for field seedling cultivation.

(3) Growing from cuttings

Take a section of leaf rachis with leaves, insert half of it into the prepared soil, spray thoroughly with water, then place it in a ventilated and shaded spot. The growing environment needs to be kept at around 25 degrees Celsius. Then spray a little water on the leaves every day, and roots will form in about half a month.

3. Daily care

(1) Light

When growing a money tree, there is no need to create a full-sun environment. They are themselves fairly shade-tolerant, so placing them in a spot at home with diffused light is enough.

(2) Water

For watering, just stick to the principle of “do not water until dry, and water thoroughly when you do.” In addition, reduce watering in winter; watering once a month is generally enough.

(3) Fertilizer

Money tree fertilizing is mainly based on nitrogen fertilizer and foliar fertilizer. Spray foliar fertilizer once a month, and apply nitrogen fertilizer once before winter to store nutrients for overwintering.

2. How should a money tree be pruned so it grows well?

A money tree needs frequent pruning to grow lushly. Pruning can be carried out in the following aspects:

1. Remove the tender tips of the branches.

2. Remove the adventitious buds newly growing on the trunk and branches, otherwise they will consume nutrients.

3. When enough new leaves have sprouted, the old leaves can be removed, which can continue to promote new leaf sprouting.

4. Prune the newly grown branches of the money tree symmetrically, and they can be pruned into a cloud shape or a natural form.

Warm tip: Money trees are more suitable for pruning and repotting in spring. Remember not to prune in autumn!
