In recent years, the state's support for the cultivation of Chinese medicinal materials has increased, and the development of the Chinese herbal medicine market has led many growers to join in. Among them,Panax notoginseng cultivationis also relatively common. Below, we will introduce its plantingtime and methods.

I. Basic information on Panax notoginseng

1. What we usually call Panax notoginseng is the dried root and rhizome of the Araliaceae plant Panax notoginseng, also known as Tianqi, ginseng notoginseng, shen notoginseng, and Wenzhou notoginseng. It is generally excavated in autumn before flowering. The main distribution areas of Panax notoginseng are Yunnan, Guangxi, Sichuan, and Jiangxi.

2. The Panax notoginseng plant is twenty to sixty cm tall, with a smooth, hairless dark green stem. At the top of the stem grow three to six whorled palmate compound leaves, and both sides of the leaves are hairless and oblong or obovate-oblong; its flowers are small and pale yellow-green, and the fruit turns bright red after ripening, with about two white seeds in each fruit.

3. The rhizome and fleshy root tubers of Panax notoginseng are relatively precious Chinese herbal medicines, with quite good effects for stopping bleeding, reducing inflammation and pain, breaking blood and dispersing stasis, and nourishing the body. In addition, the flowers and leaves of Panax notoginseng can also clear heat.

II. Planting time and methods of Panax notoginseng

(1) Time for open-field cultivation of Panax notoginseng:

The suitable time for sowing Panax notoginseng is from November in autumn to March of the following spring, but the specific time still needs to be determined according to the geographical location and the climate conditions of that year.

(2) Methods for planting Panax notoginseng:

1. For planting Panax notoginseng, sandy black loam is best, and planting on a shady, ventilated hillside is most suitable. In addition, before planting Panax notoginseng, it is best to build a canopy with wooden posts and wooden crossbeams, or build a canopy with wooden posts and wire. Remember to evenly scatter some fully decomposed base fertilizer on the well-tilled bed surface, and mix it thoroughly with the soil.

2. After sowing Panax notoginseng seeds, cover them with soil mixed with fertilizer, and then put a layer of turf on top, which can help the seeds germinate quickly.

3. Panax notoginseng that has been raised for one year should be transplanted to another site. The land prepared for transplanting Panax notoginseng must also be prepared in the same way as the seedling bed before transplanting can be carried out. When transplanting, it is best to cover the surface soil while planting.

4. After planting Panax notoginseng, appropriately adjust the light transmittance of the canopy. The light transmittance in spring should be greater than in autumn and winter, and the light transmittance in summer should be the smallest.

5. During the seedling-raising period and the management period after transplanting of Panax notoginseng, weeds in the field should be removed in time. Fertilize four to eight times each year, and topdress about once every one to two months; the fertilization times are successively after emergence, April, May, and July.

6. During seedling raising, Panax notoginseng needs artificial watering (if the soil has nighttime moisture, it may also not be watered). Use a sprinkler head to water until water runs off the bed surface. Generally, water thoroughly two to three times a month, and continue until the rainy season arrives, then it can be stopped.

7. During the planting process, pay attention to preventing and controlling damage to Panax notoginseng from yellow rust, anthracnose, black spot, green peach aphids, slugs, and other pests and diseases. Different agents should be applied for different pests and diseases.

The above is about the methods and time for planting Panax notoginseng. Friends who want to plant Panax notoginseng must master it well, so that the yield and quality of the Panax notoginseng grown will be more guaranteed.
