The rainy season is a period of high incidence of pests and diseases, and applying pesticides for control requires mastering the techniques to improve the control effect. Rain during the rainy season can severely reduce the control effect of pesticides. To improve the application effect of pesticides during the rainy season, how should pesticides be applied during the rainy season? Farmers should pay attention to the following 5 points!

1. Watch the weather and apply pesticides at the right time

Generally speaking, applying pesticides after rain is better than rain falling after application or rain falling while applying. Therefore, pay attention to weather conditions and choose a period of good weather for spraying as much as possible to improve the control effect. In addition, the application time should be chosen according to the activity patterns of pests. For example, for some pests that are active at night, such as the rice leaf roller (Cnaphalocrocis medinalis), application should be done in the evening.

2. Choose appropriate pesticides

During the rainy season, systemic, fast-acting, rain-resistant and microbial pesticides give good results.

1. Fast-acting pesticides

For example, among insecticides, pesticides such as fenvalerate (Sumicidin), monocrotophos, fenitrothion (Sumithion), deltamethrin (Decis), kuaisailing and bromo-cypermethrin have strong contact and fumigant action, and can kill pests 1 to 2 hours or 4 to 5 hours after application.

2. Systemic pesticides

Systemic pesticides can enter the plant body through the roots, stems and leaves of the crop, and be transported to other parts, taking effect in a relatively short time. For example, fungicides and insecticides such as carbendazim, triadimefon, yekujing, triadimefon (Fenxiuning), thiophanate-methyl, miebingwei, monocrotophos, methamidophos and phosphamidon, after application, 80% of the active ingredient is absorbed into the plant tissues within 4 to 5 hours, and less is lost due to rain washing.

3. Microbial active pesticides

Commonly used microbial pesticides such as BT—781, Bacillus thuringiensis (qingchongjun) and Beauveria bassiana (baijiangjun) are more conducive to the germination and reproduction of their spores under high humidity conditions. Applying such pesticides on rainy days can give fuller play to their insect-killing effect.

4. Rain-washing-resistant pesticides

Among fungicides, validamycin (jinggangmycin), miebingwei and procymidone (Sukeliling) have good rain resistance. Even if a shower occurs 1 to 5 hours after application, they will not be washed off to affect the efficacy.

3. Add adhesives and auxiliary synergists to the spray solution

Adding substances with adhesive effects, such as washing powder, cassava slurry water and tea seed cake extract, to pesticides can enhance the adhesion of pesticides on crops and pest bodies, thereby improving the control effect.

Application method: add 50 to 75 grams of washing powder, or 100 to 150 grams of cassava flour, or 250 to 300 grams of filtered tea seed cake extract to every 50 kg of spray solution, stir evenly and spray promptly. Note that it is best to prepare and use it immediately, and it must not be left standing for long. Washing powder and tea seed cake extract generally should not be mixed with acidic pesticides.

4. Appropriately increase the concentration of the spray solution

During the rainy season, the concentration of pesticides should be appropriately increased (except for highly toxic pesticides), so that the effects of disease prevention, pest control and weed control can be guaranteed. For example, if the commonly used concentration of a certain pesticide is a 1000 to 1500 times solution, an 800 to 1000 times solution can be used during the rainy season.

5. Improve the application method

For example, choose systemic insecticides and, before pests occur on a large scale, mix them with fine soil and apply them to the soil around the roots of crops, so that the plants absorb them, causing pests to die from poisoning after feeding.

Before spray application, use a smooth long bamboo pole to gently roll off the water droplets on the plants, then apply the pesticide. When spraying, change the traditional method of holding the nozzle in a zigzag motion directly in front of the body to holding the nozzle in a zigzag motion while turned sideways, so that the pesticide solution just sprayed on the plants along the path will not be knocked off by the person's movement.

Where conditions permit, an ultra-low-volume sprayer can be used for application during the rainy season. The droplets from this equipment are uniform and fine, and are easily stuck to plant leaves and stems without being lost. Replacing the 1.3 mm aperture nozzle plate on the spray wand of a manual sprayer with a 0.7 mm aperture stainless steel nozzle plate also has the same control effect. When preparing the spray solution, be careful to filter the water with a fine mesh to prevent the nozzle holes from clogging.
