As China's traditional “national flower”, the peony is deeply loved by growers and consumers alike, and the varieties of peonies continue to increase today, giving the public more choices. So how should peonies be cultivated? Below is a detailed explanation of the key technical points of peony planting and management.

I. Key Points of Peony Planting Methods

1. Choose varieties according to your needs

Different peonies are suited to different planting methods, so before planting peonies, you should be clear about what your planting needs are. For example, if you want to grow potted peonies at home, then it is best to choose peony varieties that are easy to plant and flower and have shorter plants, such as Jizhuahong, Meirenhong, Luohanhong, Ziyu, Zhaofen, Luoyanghong, Huhong, Lantianyu, Qinglong Wo Mochi, and others, which are very suitable for potted cultivation.

2. Peony planting methods

Peonies can be planted either with a soil ball or directly with bare roots. If you are a beginner at growing peonies, then it is recommended to choose the soil ball planting method, as the survival rate with this approach will be higher.

Note that when planting, it is best to trim the roots of the soil mound to a uniform length, which will promote the sprouting and establishment of new roots after planting.

The specific methods include hole planting, trench planting, and pot planting. Choosing loose, fertile, well-drained loam is most suitable. Apply base fertilizer to the soil before planting. When planting, it should not be too deep or too shallow; the root crown of the peony soil ball should be level with or slightly below the soil surface.

3. Peony planting time

There is a popular saying in the floral industry: “Plant peonies at the spring equinox, and they will never bloom even when old.” Therefore, do not plant peonies in spring! This is the most common and most fatal planting mistake made by many beginners.

In fact, the most suitable time to plant peonies is around the autumn equinox, though the timing does not need to be too rigid. Basically, mid-September to the end of October is suitable for planting peonies.

II. Key Points of Peony Management Techniques

After peonies are planted, their daily care becomes the top priority.

1. Fertilizing

Peony varieties in China have always been fond of fertilizer, so base fertilizer alone is certainly not enough to supply peonies with nutrients. Before flowering, apply a top dressing once a month; you can use a mixed fertilizer of decomposed sesame cake, soybean cake, cottonseed cake, or rapeseed cake. After flowering, fertilize once every half month. After the flowers fade, simply spray some foliar fertilizer on the peony leaves. Each time you apply top dressing, accompany it with watering, and be sure to water thoroughly.

2. Watering

Right after peonies are planted, water them thoroughly, and afterward you can judge whether to water based on the dryness or moisture of the soil. Remember that peonies are not tolerant of waterlogging, so do not water too much. If you cannot gauge it well, just water each time you fertilize.

3. Pest and disease control

The main diseases of peonies include gray mold, brown spot disease, anthracnose, ring spot disease (white star disease), leaf blight, and branch blight; the main pest problem is peony root-knot nematode disease. In fact, the main thing is to do good preventive work, strengthen cultivation management in normal times, and reduce plant wounds. After disease occurs, detect it early and apply the appropriate medicine for the symptoms.
