What causes the tips of potted spider plant leaves to dry up?
Spider plant, with its fresh green leaves shaped like orchid leaves, fresh and elegant, is a very popular foliage plant. Many people keep a pot of spider plant at home. If not cared for properly, potted spider plant is very prone to the phenomenon of dry leaf tips. What exactly causes it? How can this phenomenon be prevented?
I. Causes of dry leaf tips in spider plant
1. Caused by waterlogged potting soil and rotting of nutrient fibrous roots
Because the potting soil is compacted or too heavy and sticky, or because of overly frequent or excessive watering and other reasons, the nutrient fibrous roots of the spider plant rot, and thus the root system's ability to absorb water drops significantly, causing the tips of the spider plant leaves to turn black first and the edges to curl inward. If this is the case, the plant can be taken out of the flower pot, part of the old soil shaken off, the rotted parts of the root system cut away, and it can be replanted in clean wet sand, keeping the sand grains moist without spraying too much water. After new tender fine fibrous roots have been induced, it can then be replanted in fresh fertile potting soil.
2. Caused by humidity, light and temperature
Dry air, overly intense sunlight, and excessively high temperature. This situation mainly occurs in summer and autumn, because spider plant likes to grow in a humid and semi-shaded environment. Once the air is too dry and the sunlight is completely unobstructed, and if the temperature is as high as above 30°C, it is very easy to cause the leaf tips of the spider plant to wither. If this is the case, the plant can be moved to a semi-shaded environment, the withered leaves cut off, and water sprayed frequently on the leaf surfaces and the surrounding environment, and the newly sprouted leaves can return to a normal state.
3. Caused by not repotting for a long time
Not repotting for a long time causes the root system to grow until it reaches the pot wall. In environments of high temperature and drought or cold weather, it is very easy to cause the root tips to shrink and die, making them lose their proper absorption function, thus leading to dry and shrunken leaf tips. If this is the case, the plant can first be taken out of the flower pot, the already dead leaves or the necrotic parts of the leaves cut off, then part of the old soil removed, some aged or necrotic roots trimmed away, and it can be replanted in fresh potting soil, placed in a cool, humid, semi-shaded environment, with attention to spraying more water and watering less, and the plant's newly sprouted tender leaves can then return to normal.
4. Roots damaged during transplanting or soil changing
After transplanting, the roots are damaged or there is no good growing environment. After planting, the plant should be placed in a warm, wind-sheltered place for care. The first watering should be thorough enough to reach the roots; afterwards watering should be controlled, and water can be sprayed on the leaves every day to prevent the leaves from drying up. However, it is normal for the leaves to curl inward; as long as spraying is maintained, the leaves can spread out in about a week. When potting and planting, the roots must be pruned to promote the sprouting of new roots and increase vitality. Overlong roots and dried roots can be cut off.
II. How to prevent and treat dry leaf tips in spider plant?
1. Appropriate light. Spider plant likes a semi-shaded environment, and in autumn it should avoid direct intense sunlight. Autumn sunlight is especially intense, and during the day 50% to 70% of the sunlight needs to be shaded, otherwise the leaf tips will dry up, and variegated varieties are even more afraid of strong light.
2. Appropriate fertilizing. Spider plant is a foliage plant that is relatively tolerant of fertilizer. If fertilizer and water are insufficient, it tends to age, the leaves turn yellow, and it loses its ornamental value. It is advisable to apply 1 application of organic fertilizer liquid every 7 to 10 days, but for variegated varieties such as golden-edged and golden-hearted ones, less nitrogen fertilizer should be applied, so as to avoid the variegated leaf color fading or even disappearing and affecting the appearance. Spraying Huaduozhuangdiling at the right time and in the right amount can make the variegated leaves bright and colorful and prolong the flowering period.
3. Appropriate watering. Spider plant likes a humid environment, and the potting soil should often be kept moist. In autumn, watering should be sufficient, and around noon and in the evening water should also be sprayed on the branches and leaves to prevent the leaves from drying up. If a lot of dust accumulates on the spider plant, it affects both its growth and its appearance, so water should often be sprayed on the branches and leaves to keep them bright and beautiful. Lower withered leaves and yellow leaves should be picked off at any time, and normal humidity should be maintained at ordinary times; it should not be too dry, nor too wet.
