What is the difference between Hongyueji and Huoji? A quick guide to tell them apart

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Take a look at these pictures. Do they look like the same plant to you? Actually, they are not the same plant. The first two pictures are "Hongyueji" (red-leaf festival), while the last two pictures are "Huoji" (fire festival). Both belong to the succulent plants, and they look somewhat similar, so they are not easy to tell apart. However, they still differ in many ways. So, where exactly do their differences show up?

1. Different cultivars

The "cultivar" mentioned here does not mean that their species or genus is different. On the contrary, their species and genus are the same. However, "Hongyueji" is a cultivar produced by crossing "Chiguicheng" and "Huoji". In other words, the first plant is the offspring of the second plant, and the second plant is the father (or mother) of the first plant. Although it has inherited some characteristics, such as turning red very easily, it still has characteristics of its own.

2. Different appearance

(1) First, their leaves differ somewhat. We can start by looking at the first plant, that is, the first two pictures. We will find that its leaves are opposite and tightly packed together. Its leaves are all triangular in shape, and their surface also has many tiny concave dots that cannot be seen without careful observation. In addition, the edges of its leaves also have some fine, hair-like structures that are white, so they can form a white edge. Next, let us look at the second plant, that is, the third and fourth pictures. We will find that although its leaves are also opposite, their edges do not have the white fuzz, so of course they do not have the pretty white edge either.

(2) Then there is also a subtle difference in the color of their leaves. Some of the older leaves of the first plant are brownish red, and some are dark red, and the colors are relatively dark overall. But for the second plant, its leaves are red or light red, the color is lighter, and relatively more vivid.
