The Golden Qilin has excellent symbolism, what are its cultivation methods?
Hello everyone, today we will look at a plant with a peculiar shape, suitable for home balcony cultivation and as an office desktop potted plant——the cultivation methods of the Golden Qilin.
The Golden Qilin is also known by other names such as Jingangzuan, Tiehaitang, and Yuqilin. It is a perennial deciduous shrub of the genus Euphorbia in the family Euphorbiaceae, and an ancient fasciated cactus-type plant. Because of its peculiar form and strong vitality, it is easy to grow and keep alive, and has become a widely cultivated ornamental potted plant.
Cultivation methods of the Golden Qilin
1. Light
The Golden Qilin loves light, because its place of origin, the desert regions of South America, has abundant sunlight. Under conditions of sufficient light, the Golden Qilin grows rapidly, with thick and heavy folds, dark green epidermis, and strong ornamental value. When light is insufficient, it becomes leggy, with thin folds, lighter epidermis color, and slow growth. Therefore, when planting, fellow growers should try their best to provide it with sufficient light.
2. Temperature
The Golden Qilin likes high temperatures, but it is not very demanding about temperature and can also tolerate low temperatures. It grows rapidly at temperatures between 20 degrees and 35 degrees. When planted in a large pot, its root system can fully develop, and it can briefly tolerate a high temperature of 40 degrees. In winter, it can tolerate a low temperature of 10 degrees. When the temperature is below 10 degrees, it should be promptly moved back indoors to a warm place for the winter to avoid frost damage.
3. Soil
The Golden Qilin is not demanding about soil. It grows well in loose, fertile sandy soil with good air permeability and drainage. Therefore, when planting, you can use a potting soil made by mixing humus soil with coal cinder, or volcanic rock, perlite, etc., in a ratio of three to two. Practice has proved that coal cinder is more suitable as a mixed medium than volcanic rock and perlite in terms of structure and particle size.
4. Care
The Golden Qilin is simple to care for. When managing water and fertilizer, note that you can avoid applying highly acidic organic fertilizers such as manure and stable manure, as they can easily cause plant rot. It is recommended to apply residues left after oil extraction from oil crops, such as peanut cake residue or soybean cake residue, as organic fertilizer. This can increase the glossiness of the epidermis and enhance ornamental value. Be careful to control watering; excessive watering will cause root rot and rot at the base of the plant. Resolutely avoid water accumulation in the pot.
5. Propagation
The main propagation method of the Golden Qilin is cutting. Each year in early summer when the temperature begins to rise, select a plump and thick part from the top branches of the mother plant and cut off about 10 cm with a sharp blade as a cutting. Apply plant ash to the wounds of both the mother plant and the cutting to help the wounds heal. Place the cutting in a ventilated place for several days. After the wound has tightened, healed, and formed a scab, insert it into slightly moist, clean sandy soil and keep the potting soil in a semi-dry state. Generally, it will take root after one month, and then it can be cared for normally.
6. Pests and diseases
The Golden Qilin has relatively few pests and diseases, mainly because potting soil with too strong moisture retention or too frequent watering causes rot of the root system and plant. This can be avoided by controlling watering. If it is kept for a long time in a greenhouse or in an environment with poor ventilation, scale insects may break out. Apply pesticide promptly to kill them and avoid the spread of the pest infestation.
