Carrots are, so to speak, a nightmare for many people, but they are also a green and healthy food, rich in vitamin B. Moreover, carrots are a kind of vegetable that does not need much care, is easy to grow, and does not spoil easily, especially a vegetable that people love to eat in spring and winter. But do you know how to grow carrots in autumn and winter?

How to grow carrots in autumn and winter

One: Variety selection

When choosing carrot seeds, you must select the best among them: choose ones with some resistance to disease, good yield, and carrots that are tasty, large and attractive when grown, that need a longer growing period, and of the type whose leaves grow especially large. In recent years, several carrot varieties have grown well, and types such as Bai Ri Hong Guan have a relatively good market.

Two: Seed sowing techniques

1. Carrots are generally planted after preparing the land in July. Carrots need the support of a large amount of fertilizer. Before planting, every mu of land must be fertilized so that the soil has sufficient base fertilizer. About six thousand jin of fully rotted farmyard manure is enough. Also, when applying chemical fertilizer, it should be spread as evenly as possible. The chemical fertilizer applied is a kind of compound fertilizer, about fifty to sixty jin, mixed with forty jin of urea and sixty to one hundred jin of superphosphate; after fertilizing, the land must be plowed, then leveled and made into beds. Make flat beds in sandy soil, and use high beds in places where it rains often.

2. Sowing seeds is generally done in drills. First open a furrow in the bed at a spacing of 0.15-0.02 m, with each furrow about two cm deep, and sow in the furrow, evenly; if any seeds are scattered outside the furrow, you can lightly sweep them into the furrow with a broom, then just rake it level, tread it firm with your feet, and sprinkle water. Sow about two hundred fifty to three hundred grams per mu of land. If you have more funds, you can also use drill sowing, then open furrows and sow, and it is done.

Three: Water management

1. Once the carrots are planted, you have to take good care of them. They need soil that always retains moisture, so water them three times a day. When they grow a little bigger, that is, when they have grown one or two leaves, pick a sunny noon to help them thin out, with each seedling three cm apart, then lightly hoe between them with a hoe.

2. When the carrots have grown four or five leaves, choose a noon on a very sunny day to set the seedlings. Pull out the carrot seedlings that are planted too densely, too fragile, and diseased, then set the seedlings according to their respective characteristics; each carrot should be ten to twelve cm apart, and twenty-five thousand to thirty thousand seedlings should be kept per mu of land.

3. After doing the above work, you also need to weed, and weed shallowly to prevent accidentally damaging the roots. During its growth period, the weather is hot and there is a lot of rain, so water according to the actual situation. Whether it has rained or not, you must loosen the soil for it.

Four: Field management

1. When the seedlings have grown seven or eight leaves, watering must be controlled, and the soil should be loosened more so that the roots can grow better and the carrots are prevented from growing only leaves. When their flesh is as big as a finger, water must be well controlled; preventing them from being too dry, which makes the flesh woody, while too much water makes them prone to rot. Alternating dry and wet will make the carrots crack.

2. Autumn carrots do take a long time to grow, and they still need good fertilizing in the middle and late stages. So when the carrots have grown to a certain point, they also need fertilizing. At this time, apply quick-acting fertilizer; over the whole growth period we need to fertilize three times, about once every fifteen days. The first time is at the root-thickening stage; after fertilizing, water them, so as not to burn the carrot roots. The following two times are the same.

Growing carrots is actually very simple; as long as you clearly understand the selection of varieties and land in the early stage of planting, and manage them reasonably and effectively during the growing period, a high carrot yield is no problem.
