Bayberry is a fruit loved by many people, sweet and sour; just hearing the word "bayberry" makes one unable to resist swallowing. Every year when bayberry ripens and hits the market, growers still cannot let their guard down, as this period makes bayberry highly susceptible to pest and disease attacks. So, which diseases are likely to appear after bayberry fruit harvest? How to prevent and control them?

June is both the ripening and the picking period for bayberry, during which it suffers from brown spot disease, canker disease, white rot, scale insects, fruit flies and many other pests and diseases. During the bayberry ripening period, within 30 to 40 days before picking, spraying chemical pesticides to control pests and diseases is strictly prohibited.

1. Brown spot disease

Remove overwintering sources of the disease, sweep up fallen leaves and burn them, and spray 3 to 5 degrees Baume lime sulfur mixture once to eliminate the pathogen. For the sake of pollution-free and safe production, fruit-bearing trees should be sprayed during the summer shoot germination period, that is, after fruit harvest, using 60% pyraclostrobin · metiram (Baitai) 1000-fold solution, or 70% propineb (Antaisheng) 600-fold solution, or 42.8% fluopyram · trifloxystrobin (Luna Sensation) 2000-fold, or 33.5% copper quinoline (Bilu) 1000 to 2000-fold solution, or 1:2:200 Bordeaux mixture and other agents. Spray thoroughly over the canopy, branches and trunks, both sides of leaves and the ground.

2. Scale insects

Mainly the cypress oyster scale, which has 2 generations a year; its occurrence area is large and damage is severe, causing withered branches and yellow leaves, and in serious cases the whole plant dies. The first generation peaks in June for hatching, which coincides with the bayberry ripening and picking period, so pesticides cannot be sprayed; the second generation of eggs begins in mid-July, peaks in August, and can be sprayed for control after bayberry harvest. You can use 99% SK mineral oil (Lüying) 300-fold solution + 22% Tefuli 3000-fold solution mixed, or 48% Lesiben 1200-fold solution, or 25% copper quinoline (Jieben) 1500-fold solution. These agents can also be used in the early stage of fruit enlargement.

Alternatively, in combination with spring and autumn pruning, cut off dead branches, withered branches and diseased or pest-infested branches, and burn them in a centralized manner, which can reduce the insect population base for the next year and also promote the bayberry tree to sprout new shoots. At the same time, during winter orchard clearing, use 99% SK mineral oil 200-fold solution, or 3 to 5 degrees Baume lime sulfur mixture to kill overwintering scale insects.

3. Canker disease

It can be controlled throughout the year. First scrape the diseased tissue clean and promptly brush on 402 antibacterial agent plus sulfur suspension 100-fold solution, or lime sulfur mixture, carbendazim suspension concentrate 5 to 10-fold solution, etc.

4. Fruit flies

An important pest damaging the fruit, occurring commonly, starting in mid-May, and reproducing very quickly. 15 days before fruit harvest, spray the ground with 50% Qianke 2000-fold solution. The canopy can be sprayed with 6% Ailüshi 1500-fold solution, or use methods such as trapping adults and fumigation to drive away and kill adults.

5. White rot

Fruit rot during the picking period is a fungal disease. About 1 month before fruit harvest, use Liwei Youguo nutrient solution 700-fold solution mixed with 42.8% Luna Sensation 2000-fold solution, or spray the canopy with 42.4% Jianda 2000-fold solution, which can increase fruit firmness and enhance disease resistance.
