The distinctive Clivia is a houseplant beloved by many, but Clivia is also notoriously difficult to grow. For example, during care it is prone to leaf yellowing, which seriously affects the Clivia’s “looks”. So what do Clivia leaf yellowing pictures look like? What causes them?

1. What do Clivia leaf yellowing pictures look like?

1. Characteristics of Clivia leaf yellowing

In fact, Clivia leaf yellowing can take many forms. For example, in some cases the leaf tips turn yellow, while in others the yellowing starts from the base of the leaf and moves upward, and in still others it appears in the middle or is scattered in various spots across the leaf blade. This needs to be checked one by one in light of the improper factors that arose during care. Refer to the specific pictures of Clivia leaf yellowing below:

2. What harm does Clivia leaf yellowing cause?

Setting aside the effect on Clivia’s ornamental value, when Clivia shows symptoms of leaf yellowing it generally means it is “sending a warning cry for help” to its grower. If it is not due to an acclimation issue and is left ignored, the Clivia will very likely gradually go from leaf yellowing to the plant drying up, until it dies.

2. What causes Clivia leaf yellowing?

Clivia leaf yellowing is very likely caused by inadequate care and management in the following aspects.

1. Too much light

Many people, wanting their Clivia to bloom earlier, simply assume that giving them more sun is best. After all, without sun how could it bloom? So they place it directly in direct sunlight, and within a few days the leaves start turning yellow.

In fact, Clivia does not like sunlight as much as we imagine; placing it somewhere with diffused light is enough. Strong sunlight instead causes the Clivia leaves to dehydrate, resulting in “sunburn yellowing”. Leaf yellowing in this case usually appears as entire leaves turning yellow.

What needs to be done at this point is to cut off the leaves that have already turned yellow, then immediately move the Clivia to a relatively cool, ventilated place, and add some water.

2. Too much water

Another case is overwatering: the Clivia roots cannot absorb that much water, so water accumulates in the pot. After a few days, the roots rot, so nutrient supply becomes inadequate and the leaves begin to turn yellow in patches.

At this point you should first drain the accumulated water from the pot, remove the already rotted Clivia roots, disinfect them, then move it to a dry, ventilated place and carry out routine care.

3. The plant suffers from pests and diseases

When Clivia suffers from leaf spot disease, anthracnose, or pests and diseases, yellow or yellow-brown spots appear on the leaves and gradually spread. You can buy specialized sprays for this type of pest or disease and apply them as treatment.
