The ash tree has a graceful, spreading crown, dense shade and a long lifespan, making it a popular urban greening tree species. Since there is no worry about finding a market for it, it has also become a planting choice for many forest farmers. So how much do ash saplings cost? When is the best time to plant them for good survival?

1. How much do ash saplings cost?

The price of ash saplings is related to their size. At present, the main sizes of ash saplings are 5 cm, 6 cm, 7 cm, 8 cm, 9 cm, 10 cm, 12 cm, 14 cm and so on. The specific price depends on the quote from each nursery base. Currently, prices range from one to two hundred yuan to one to two thousand yuan per tree. In many areas, ash saplings of about 10 cm cost around 300 yuan or more each, but if you buy in large quantities, you should be able to get a better discount on the price.

2. When is the best time to plant ash saplings for good survival?

1. Planting time for ash saplings

Ash trees can be planted in both southern and northern China, but there is a slight difference in planting time.

The key is to grasp the changes in soil temperature during the planting season of the current year. The best time to plant ash trees is when the soil temperature is 10—13°C. Planting at this time gives a high survival rate for ash trees. Therefore, in northern China, soil temperature in this range generally occurs from late April to early May each year, while in southern China it can be advanced to early April.

2. Planting management for ash saplings

Besides planting time, the planting management of ash trees is also an important factor affecting their survival rate.

(1) Watering

After planting ash trees, watering should be controlled. Be sure to avoid excessive watering that causes waterlogging, which can make the roots rot.

(2) Loosening the soil

After the ash trees survive, the soil should be loosened shallowly; at later stages of planting, the soil should be loosened more deeply. Also note that the roots of the ash tree must not be damaged during the whole process, and soil loosening should be stopped during the hardening period of planting.

(3) Fertilizing

The main types of base fertilizer include nitrogen fertilizer, potassium fertilizer and phosphorus fertilizer, or a mixture of these fertilizers.

After the rapid growth period, fertilizer supplementation can be stopped. When fertilizing, follow the principle of small amounts applied multiple times.

(4) Pest and disease control

The main pest of ash trees is the ash scale insect. Preventive methods should focus on strengthening work in reasonable fertilization, seed disinfection, selection of improved varieties and soil disinfection. When pests occur, a 1000-fold dilution of 50% fenitrothion can be sprayed to kill the young larvae on ash trees.

The main disease of ash trees is ash gummosis, which causes slow tree growth and can even lead to the tree dying, affecting its ornamental appearance. Prevention mainly focuses on avoiding waterlogging and maintaining loose soil. You can also whitewash the lower part of the ash tree to enhance its disease resistance.
