Lettuce, also known as leaf lettuce, goosefoot vegetable, or lettuce sprout, originated along the Mediterranean coast of Europe and was later introduced to our country; it is a common vegetable on everyone's dining table. So, what are the planting method and timing for lettuce? Let's learn about it together!

1. Planting Time

Lettuce is delicate in appearance and is generally sown and planted in spring and autumn, because summers are hot with intense sunlight that can easily scorch the leaf surface. Lettuce grows extremely fast and has a short growth cycle; generally, it can be harvested for eating about one month after planting out. Spring sowing is in March to April, and autumn sowing is in July to August. Nowadays, off-season planting can also be done through greenhouse methods.

2. Light Requirements

Lettuce is a long-day plant; with sufficient light it grows well and has thick, plump leaves. Lettuce is relatively tolerant of weak light and has the characteristic of being able to use weak light, but sufficient light is beneficial to plant growth, and heading lettuce forms tight heads. When light is too weak, the leaves are thin and the heads are loose, and yield decreases, so it should not be planted too densely during cultivation.

3. Planting Method

1. Seed Germination

When growing lettuce in the hot season, the seeds must also be given low-temperature germination treatment. First soak them in tap water for about six hours, rub them clean, remove them, wrap them well in wet gauze, and place them in a 15 to 18 degrees Celsius environment to germinate.

2. Raising Seedlings and Transplanting

Before sowing lettuce, first water the seedbed thoroughly, then mix the seeds evenly with an equal amount of wet fine sand and broadcast sow. Whether growing in a greenhouse or in the open field in winter and spring, be sure to maintain the seedbed temperature.

3. Scientific Fertilization

The planting soil should be a clay loam rich in organic matter with strong fertilizer and water retention capacity. Basically, for every 1,000 kg of lettuce, 2.5 kg of nitrogen fertilizer, 2.4 jin of phosphate fertilizer, and 9 jin of potassium fertilizer need to be absorbed, so fertilization should be carried out according to this amount. Calculated on the basis of a yield of 2,000 kg per mu, an average of 5.1 kg of nitrogen, 2.4 kg of phosphorus pentoxide, and 8.8 kg of potassium oxide is absorbed per mu. Lettuce is a fast-growing leafy vegetable with a short growth period and can be harvested in about one month, so sufficient nitrogen fertilizer must be supplied throughout the entire growth period.

4. Careful Planting Out

When planting out, be sure to be careful. First irrigate the seedbed the day before; when lifting the seedlings the next day, bring along a bit more soil. When planting out, first open furrows on the bed surface, with a furrow depth of 4 to 6 cm.

5. Management After Planting Out

Lettuce likes moisture, so during the growth process it should be given plenty of water to ensure an adequate supply. Within five to seven days after planting out, water once to help the seedlings recover; at other times, water once every two or three days. Note that watering should be stopped before harvesting.

6. Pest and Disease Control

The main diseases of lettuce include soft rot, viral disease, downy mildew, and so on. Among them, the more harmful ones are sclerotinia and soft rot, so it is recommended that everyone do a good job of pest and disease prevention in advance; prevention is better than treatment.
