II. Chinese olive cultivation techniques

1. The growing environment of Chinese olive

The Chinese olive tree likes warmth. During the growing period it needs appropriately high temperatures to grow vigorously and bear good fruit. Areas with an annual average temperature above 20°C and no severe frost damage in winter are most suitable for its growth. In winter it can tolerate short periods of low temperatures down to minus 3°C, but when the temperature drops below 4°C severe frost damage occurs. Sufficient rainfall is required. Well-drained and fertile soil is most suitable

2. Planting out Chinese olive

(1) Planting out small seedlings

Planting time: Grain Rain to Start of Summer

Planting method: The soil in the hole should first be burned with fire. When planting, use surface fine soil, add water in the hole and mix into mud slurry, place the seedling into the slurry so that the lateral roots spread out naturally, then cover with fine soil and press firm.

(2) Planting out large seedlings

When planting, the trunk only needs to be buried 6 cm deep. Water after planting. Note: (1) Lifting the seedlings and planting out must be done very carefully; do not break the root bark or damage the root tips; (2) Do not apply base fertilizer in the hole, use only easily rooting red-yellow soil from the surface layer; (3) The soil must be pressed firm and compacted, which is the key to survival; (4) After planting, set up protective supports.

3. Field management of Chinese olive

(1) Fertilization time

Fertilization for young trees: mainly nitrogen fertilizer, appropriately combined with other fertilizers, following the principle of frequent light applications, generally once every two months, or once before and after each shoot flush.

Fertilization for fruiting trees: three times a year. Pre-flowering fertilizer: nitrogen around March. Post-fruit fertilizer: nitrogen and potassium around October to strengthen flowers. Flower bud differentiation fertilizer: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in November-December.

(2) Fertilization method: Dig two half-moon-shaped trenches around the outer edge of the tree canopy and apply the fertilizer into the trenches. If it is liquid fertilizer, cover with soil after it dries; if it is dry fertilizer, cover with soil immediately after application.
