A Detailed Guide to Garlic Scape Planting Methods and Planting Time
Garlic scape, also known as garlic sprout, and called garlic bolt in some places, is the flower stalk pulled out from garlic. It is widely distributed across most regions of our country and can be stored for a long time without spoiling easily. So, what planting methods are there for garlic scape? When is the planting time? Let's find out together!
I. Planting Time
Garlic scape is widely distributed in our country, grown in both the north and the south. It prefers a warm environment and has weak cold resistance, so it is not suitable for planting in winter or in cold regions. However, excessively high temperatures also have a certain effect on its growth, so it is generally planted in spring and autumn. Of course, with the maturity of greenhouse technology, many vegetables can be grown out of season, and garlic scape can too. It has strong growth vigor, can grow repeatedly for many years, and offers higher economic returns.
II. Planting Methods
1. Seed Selection
Our country has a long history of cultivating garlic scape. Through long-term cultivation and breeding, there are many varieties. When planting, choose high-quality early-maturing varieties with strong disease resistance, fast growth, wide and soft leaves, and high yield. This will save a lot of planting trouble, and while making planting easier, it can also increase yield.
2. Soil Selection and Land Preparation
Choose a plot with loose, fertile soil, flat terrain, and good drainage for planting, or choose a plot where grain crops such as wheat or corn were previously grown, which is best. However, avoid choosing a plot where scallions, ginger, or garlic have been grown. Along with land preparation, apply base fertilizer to the plot, with organic fertilizer being best, then deep-plow and prepare the land, level it, and make beds.
3. Sowing
Select garlic bulbs with neat cloves, no disease spots, and no damage as seed garlic. Clean the garlic bulbs, then soak them in clean water for 10-12 hours to promote germination. After soaking, carry out sterilization treatment and then sow. This can effectively eliminate pathogens on the garlic bulbs, reduce the chance of disease, and also promote germination. Insert the treated garlic cloves into the soil, then cover with soil and press flat. Sow about 200kg per mu, water after sowing, maintain soil moisture, and cover with a layer of plastic film to keep warm and retain moisture.
4. Field Management
Pay attention and observe. When the garlic scape has broken through the soil, promptly tear open the plastic film to ensure the growth of the garlic scape. In the early stage, garlic scape generally does not need watering or fertilizing. When the garlic scape grows to 10-15cm, water and fertilize once. Later watering should follow changes in the seasonal climate. Do not water too much, so as to avoid root rot. Keeping the soil slightly dry is sufficient.
5. Disease Control
The main diseases of garlic scape include leaf blight, bacterial soft rot, garlic sclerotium rot, and so on. In the early stage of disease, therapeutic fungicides such as difenoconazole, benzyl bromothalonil, and tebuconazole can be selected, and used together with protective agents such as mancozeb and pyraclostrobin.
