Hyacinths come in many colors, and the flower colors are very beautiful. Hyacinths like sun and tolerate cold, and prefer to bloom in early spring. The hyacinth is a bulbous flower with a rich, mellow fragrance. It likes a slightly moist environment and tolerates drought, and can be planted either in water or in soil. So how do you grow hyacinths? How do you extend the hyacinth flowering period?

1. How do you grow hyacinths?

1. Soil requirement: sandy soil

For hyacinths, the soil should be a sandy soil that drains well yet is not dry. Generally, leaf mold, nutrient soil, and sand are mixed in a 4:2:4 ratio. This kind of soil has high organic matter content and good granular structure. Just make sure the soil PH value is 6-7. If you want to increase the organic matter nutrition, you can mix in some bone meal.

2. Humidity requirement

The humidity of the cultivation soil should be maintained at around 60-70%. If the humidity is too high, its root system is prone to rotting; if too low, it will cause the plant to wilt.

3. Temperature requirement

During the growth of hyacinths, the roots of the bulb grow best at a low temperature of 2-6°C. The suitable temperature for bud break is 5-10°C, the suitable temperature for leaf growth is 5-12°C, and 15-18°C is most favorable during the bud-appearing and flowering stage. The storage temperature for the bulb is 20-28°C, with 25°C being the most suitable and ideal for flower bud differentiation. It can tolerate short periods of frost.

4. Light requirement

Hyacinths need only 5000Lx or more of light. Light must be well controlled. If the light is too weak, an incandescent lamp can be used to supplement light at a distance of about 1 m, but if the light is too strong, it will cause scorching of the leaves and petals or shorten the flowering period.

2. How do you extend the hyacinth flowering period?

1. Supplement some vitamins, such as balanced vitamin tablets like (21 Golden Vita), or when it is about to bloom, crush them into powder and bury them around the hyacinth.

2. Hyacinths are also suitable for water culture, and the root system grows just the same when soaked in water. But when growing in soil, you must pay attention to soil humidity. If grown long-term in soil that is too moist, it may affect root growth or even cause root rot. When growing in clean water, change the water once a week; when growing with nutrient solution, change it depending on how cloudy it becomes, keeping the water quality in the bottle clean.

3. Generally around 20°C, but preferably not above 20°C. After the flowers bloom, try to avoid high temperatures. If conditions permit, the temperature can be controlled between 5-10°C, which can extend the flowering period by as much as several days.

4. Before flowering, the plant should receive sufficient direct sunlight every day, preferably 3-4 hours per day. After flowering, avoid direct sunlight and instead grow it in diffused light or in a bright place; this can effectively extend the flowering period.
