Lemon Planting Methods and Key Points of Cultivation and Management Techniques
Lemon is also called ningmeng fruit, foreign lemon, yimuguo, and so on. Its rind is thick and yellow, and people often use it for seasoning, infusing in water, and so on. It is also a nemesis of scurvy. So, what planting methods does lemon have? Let us learn about them together!
1. Sowing and seedling raising
There are many methods for raising lemon seedlings, among which there are two major categories: sexual propagation and asexual propagation. Sexual propagation is sowing, directly sowing seeds in the soil. The sowing method is suitable for large-scale seedling raising and is relatively fast. Select a vigorous mother plant free of disease, pick mature lemons around December, place them in a cool area for a few days, cut the fruit open, and mainly take care not to damage the seeds inside. After taking out the seeds, soak them in water for 5-7 days. Wait until they are saturated with water, then tear off the surface film and they can be sown. Note that the water should be changed every day during soaking. After sowing the seeds, keep the temperature between 15-25 degrees, and they will sprout in about a week.
2. Soil selection and land preparation
Lemon prefers a warm environment, is shade-tolerant, not cold-tolerant, and afraid of heat, so it is suitable for planting in southern regions. It grows relatively fast and has high fertilizer requirements, so when planting, choose loose, fertile, well-drained land, plow the soil deeply and sun-bleach it white, dig large holes of 80x80cm, and plant about 50-60 plants per mu. Mix fertilizer with soil and fill it into the holes, then cover with a layer of soil, and then it can be planted.
3. Field planting
When the young tree grows to 50-80cm, it can be field planted. Field planting should be done by transplanting with soil, and care should be taken not to damage the plant root system over a large area. Place it into the hole, straighten it, and fill with soil. The filled soil should be pressed firm and leveled. Choose the morning or afternoon time period for field planting, or directly plant on cloudy days. Avoid noon or rainy weather. After field planting, water with rooting water, then use plastic film or straw to retain moisture.
4. Later management
Lemon trees grow extremely fast, so they need sufficient water and fertilizer. When watering, water according to climate changes and the degree of soil dryness and wetness, and keep the soil moist. In the first two years before field planting, timely apply nitrogen fertilizer to promote rapid plant growth and prompt crown formation. After the crown is formed, control nitrogen fertilizer and increase the application of other fertilizers. In addition, timely carry out intertillage and weeding, generally three or four times a year, especially before summer. Summer is hot and water evaporation is high, so timely intertillage before summer arrives can keep the soil loose and reduce water loss.
Lemon has a wide planting range and is widely cultivated in Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangdong, and Guangxi. Everyone can choose whether to cultivate lemon according to the natural conditions of the planting site.
