Today the editor will introduce a fruit called papaya. Surely everyone is no stranger to this fruit. What kind of fruit is papaya exactly? What are its planting and management techniques? I believe many friends have such questions. Below, the editor of Tuliu.com will answer them one by one for everyone

I. What papaya is

Papaya is a small tree or shrub of the Rosaceae family. The editor very much likes eating papaya; its nutritional value is very high, and it also has health-care functions. But today the editor is not introducing papaya's effects and benefits. In our country, products made with papaya as a raw material have already been successfully developed and marketed, including papaya juice beverages, papaya fruit wine, papaya preserves, melon fruit vinegar and so on. It is planted in many places in our country, such as Guangxi, Guangdong, Yunnan, Fujian, Taiwan, China and other places. The market demand in our country is very large, and it is welcomed by people.

II. Papaya tree management techniques

1. Planting density management

Papaya can be planted in spring and autumn. When it sprouts, promptly remove the root suckers at the base and the sprouts within 30 cm of the main trunk, and properly thin out part of the overly dense new shoots.

2. Water and fertilizer management

Generally, base fertilizer is applied in autumn, accounting for about 80 percent of the total annual fertilizer application. Fertilization should be carried out according to the specific growth state of the papaya tree. During the full fruit-bearing period, promptly apply additional pre-flowering and post-flowering fertilizer as well as fruit-swelling fertilizer. Young trees can have their fertilizer amount reduced. After fertilizing, irrigate once thoroughly with water, and pay attention to controlling water during the flowering period.

3. Field management

In the first and second years of papaya, the flowers must be picked off at any time. In the spring of the third year, strengthen the management of flowers and fruits and topdress fertilizers well at each stage. The fruit-setting rate of self-pollination is high; if artificial pollination is done during the flowering period or honeybees are released, the fruit-setting rate can be greatly increased. If pollination is poor, it will cause the fruit to drop off automatically, so each year after fruit setting it is enough just to remove deformed fruit and poorly growing fruit.

4. Proper pruning

During the growing season, pay attention to pruning off some competing branches, overly dense branches, thin and weak branches, diseased and pest-infested branches, as well as upright, vigorously growing long branches inside the canopy. After papaya is grafted, the central leader branch is relatively upright, so only slight pruning is needed to train it into a cup shape. There are also many other shapes, but generally the slender shape is the main one. If there is a gap in the branches, a few buds can be retained and then cut back again to promote branching.

5. Pest and disease control

The main diseases of papaya include dry rot, leaf spot and ring rot. The main pests include aphids, red spiders, stinging caterpillars and so on. Spraying with chemicals can effectively help the papaya tree get through the disease stage. After winter begins, clean up the orchard and collect all dead branches and fallen leaves in one place for destruction.
