Dried persimmon is a famous traditional Chinese snack; it is a cooling fruit, so it should not be eaten in large amounts at one time. Persimmon tree grafting generally involves grafting different varieties of persimmon trees onto each other, and they are not grafted onto other fruit trees. So, what are the grafting time and methods for persimmon trees? How many persimmon trees should be planted per mu?

I. What are the grafting time and methods for persimmon trees?

1. When should persimmon trees be grafted?

Persimmon trees are generally grafted from late March all the way to late April; if done earlier or later, their survival rate will drop considerably.

2. What grafting methods are there for persimmon trees?

There are many grafting methods for persimmon trees, generally cleft grafting and bud grafting.

(1) Cleft grafting

Cleft grafting is generally carried out in March each year before the tree buds sprout; select tender branches as scions, insert the scion into the cleft of the rootstock, and make sure the contact surfaces of the two are tight, without leaving a large gap.

(2) Bud grafting

Bud grafting methods are further divided into T-shaped bud grafting, H-shaped bud grafting and square bud grafting. For example, T-shaped bud grafting is best done around Xiaoman (Grain Full); cut a T shape into the rootstock, select a plump growing bud on the scion, first make a horizontal cut above the chosen bud, slowly place the bud into the already cut T shape on the rootstock, slowly push it upward until the two horizontal cut surfaces are aligned, then tie it tightly with plastic film.

II. How many persimmon trees should be planted per mu?

The planting density of persimmon seedlings depends on the terrain, soil, variety, rootstock and cultivation management conditions. In dry, poor mountainous areas, 3X4 m (56 trees per mu); in fertile flatland, 4X5 m (33 trees per mu). If propagating persimmon seedlings, about 8,000 can be planted per mu (plant spacing about 0.2X0.4 m). The width of the planting hole at the surface, and its bottom width and depth, should reach 1 m, 0.8 m and 0.6 m respectively.

The above is the answer to the questions “What are the grafting time and methods for persimmon trees? How many persimmon trees should be planted per mu?” We hope it can help you.
