Purslane is a wild vegetable rich in nutritional value with a delicious taste, deeply loved by the public. Wild purslane is becoming less and less common now, and due to high market demand, more and more people are starting to cultivate it artificially. So, how do you grow purslane?

1. Propagation methods

Purslane is a herbaceous plant with relatively strong vitality, and its propagation methods mainly fall into two types: one is propagation by seed, and the other is propagation by cuttings. Each has its own advantages. Seed propagation is more in line with the current situation of large-scale artificial propagation, while cuttings require a certain level of skill, but you can select high-quality varieties for cuttings to achieve high-quality cultivation results. If you plan to grow on a large scale, it is recommended to use seeds, as this facilitates overall management.

2. Transplant management

Both of the above methods ultimately require transplanting after successful cultivation. Generally, transplanting can begin after 2-3 weeks, when the seedlings are just at the most suitable stage for transplanting, with roots developing steadily, and the survival rate after transplanting will be very high. The soil for transplanting should be prepared with fertilizer in advance, and sandy, breathable soil is best. After transplanting, a little water should be poured, not too much, just enough to moisten the surface soil. The spacing between each plant should be controlled at 20-30 cm, allowing them to grow outward in all directions and increasing yield.

3. Cultivation management

Management after transplanting focuses mainly on fertilizer and water, because purslane has relatively few weeds around it since it is a herbaceous plant. For fertilizing, it is recommended to use urea as the main fertilizer, as this helps the rapid growth of its roots and branches. Generally, no fertilizing is needed before the first harvest, so the initial base fertilizer should be applied generously, controlled at around 2500 jin per mu. Later, a small amount of farmyard manure can be applied. As for watering, it is recommended once every 3-7 days, adjustable according to conditions, with each watering controlled to seep into 2-3 cm of soil.

4. Harvesting precautions

Purslane is a crop that is harvested over a long period, so each harvest should not be excessive, allowing it to grow back better next time. When harvesting, try to pick only the freshest and most tender parts of the stems and leaves, leaving about 4-5 nodes on the roots and stems. After the first harvest, the growth cycle of purslane is about 2-3 weeks, so it should be harvested in time. Harvesting too late is not good for subsequent growth.

The above are the cultivation methods for purslane. Hope they can help you!
