When Is the Best Month to Plant Water Spinach? Timing Matters
Today we're going to talk specifically about choosing the right time to plant water spinach. Everyone knows that water spinach originated in the south, so it prefers a warm and humid environment. Generally speaking, if you're in the Yangtze River basin, water spinach can grow between April and October.
But being able to grow is one thing, and achieving the best output efficiency is another. How to choose the best planting time still requires quite a bit of knowledge.
1. The Habits of Water Spinach
The scientific name of water spinach is water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica). Different regions have different names for it. Water spinach is mainly the name used in provinces such as Guizhou, Guangxi and Sichuan; in Guangdong it is called water spinach, and in Jiangsu it is called vine vine vegetable, and so on.
Water spinach grows best in warm, humid climates and in fertile, moist soil. It is not cold-tolerant; its stems and leaves die when frost occurs. In the past, water spinach was rarely grown in the north, but with the development of greenhouse technology, it can now be grown in the north as well, as long as suitable conditions of soil, light and temperature are maintained.
2. Choosing the Planting Time for Water Spinach
1. Open-field planting
When planting water spinach in the open field, you must harvest it before frost, because water spinach has poor cold tolerance, and if it cannot be harvested by the time frost arrives, there will be significant losses. Generally, planting can begin from April to July. Water spinach has fairly strong vitality and is not very strict about soil conditions. You only need to continue watering and fertilizing during the growing period, and it will grow rapidly.
2. Greenhouse planting
Greenhouse planting can basically produce every year, and it can also produce every year. To obtain high economic benefits, it should be planted from October to December and brought to market from December to March.
3. Precautions During the Water Spinach Planting Process
1. Land preparation and seed soaking: Before planting water spinach, the soil must be deeply plowed. Only by deeply plowing the soil can the water spinach seeds germinate better after planting. In addition to deeply plowing the land once, fertilizer must also be applied. Per mu of land, about 3 kg of organic fertilizer can be used, and about 2 kg of human and livestock manure and urine can also be applied, then about 100 kg of plant ash can be mixed into the soil. Before sowing, the seeds must be treated. They can be soaked in warm water for about 30 minutes, with the water temperature controlled at about 60 degrees. After soaking, soak them in clean water for 24 hours, then scoop them out and place them at a temperature of about 25 degrees to promote germination. During germination, humidity and temperature must be maintained. After that, the seeds can be washed once every day. Only when white spots appear on the seeds can they be sown. This germination promotion work is very important, as it determines whether they can grow healthily after sowing.
2. Sowing: Each plant can be spaced 33 cm apart, and after sowing, cover with soil. At the same time, the broadcast sowing method can also be used, but when broadcasting, it must be even so that the water spinach can grow evenly.
3. Field management: In addition to applying enough base fertilizer, fertilizer and water must also be applied in stages after planting. Only in this way can higher yields be obtained. During the seedling stage, fertilizer can be applied once, using human urine for drenching, with the amount per mu at about 1500 kg. When the seedlings grow to four leaves, 20 kg of compound fertilizer and 4 kg of urea can be mixed and used. During the harvest period, use about 8 kg of compound fertilizer per mu. Water spinach requires a relatively large amount of water, so after fertilizing, it should be watered promptly to keep the soil moist. During the growth period of water spinach, weeds must also be removed promptly. Because these weeds will absorb the nutrients of the water spinach, removing them promptly can ensure it grows better.
4. Timely harvesting: The last step is harvesting the water spinach. About 45 days after sowing, it can be harvested appropriately. During the harvest period, it can also be determined according to the size of the plant's growth; for example, it can be harvested when it is 30 cm tall, but at this time it is only suitable for continuous harvesting. If harvesting all at once, it can be harvested when the water spinach plant is about 25 cm tall. If harvesting multiple times, about 10 cm of the water spinach plant should be left at each harvest so that it can continue to grow. We can also harvest water spinach regularly according to market sales and market prices, which can also ensure we get the maximum benefit and at the same time increase our economic returns in the water spinach market.
Choosing a good planting time is very important, but field management is equally important. Although water spinach has fairly strong vitality, if field management is neglected, there is still a risk of reduced yield, so everyone must pay attention to it.
