Golden privet, also known as British privet, is a hybrid of California golden-edged privet and European privet. Because of its distinctive golden color, it has important value in landscape configuration, and in recent years its use in urban greening has been increasing, but golden privet is also relatively prone to fusarium wilt, so what are the control methods for golden privet fusarium wilt?

I. Symptoms and occurrence pattern of golden privet fusarium wilt

After golden privet is infected with this disease, it first shows wilting and drooping leaves, the leaves lose their luster, gradually lose green until the leaves turn yellow and dry, until the entire plant dies; the bark of the branches is very easy to peel off, and the underground part shows dead fibrous roots that break easily. Golden privet fusarium wilt is a fungal infectious disease.

The pathogen overwinters in the soil and in diseased plant residues, invades through the underground roots, spreads to all parts of the plant through the vascular bundles, and multiplies within the vascular bundles, causing blockage or poisoning, so that the transport function is lost, causing the plant to wilt until it dies. After the pathogen infects the roots, the conduction function of nutrients and water is lost, thus causing nutritional deficiency in the plant, and then death.

High temperature and high humidity and standing water on the ground favor the occurrence of the disease, so the peak period of golden privet fusarium wilt is from June to August each year, and it continues until October. Fusarium wilt harms seedlings more than older plants, and is a devastating disease; once it occurs, almost all plants die, so prevention work is key.

II. Control methods for golden privet fusarium wilt

1. Avoid standing water

The planting site should be conducive to drainage, and standing water must not occur.

2. Planting density should be reasonable

The greater the plant density, the more serious the occurrence of the disease. As golden privet grows, combine pruning with reasonable branch training to enhance internal ventilation and light penetration and reduce humidity and temperature.

3. Reduce sources of disease infection

Clear diseased plant residues from the planting site and remove weeds at any time. This not only reduces sources of infection, but also increases ventilation and light penetration, helping to create a healthy growing environment for the plants.

4. Strengthen fertilizer and water management to increase the plant's own resistance

In road greening, the soil is generally rather poor, and combined with little fertilization, it easily causes nutritional deficiency in the plants. Applying fertilizer once in spring and broadcasting compound fertilizer combined with rain during the rainy season are both helpful for improving the resistance of golden privet and its early recovery after disease.

5. Prune at the right time and treat wounds promptly

Heavy pruning can be done in winter, but once the rainy season arrives, pruning should be reduced to reduce wounds and lower the chance of pathogens invading through wounds. Spray fungicide immediately after pruning. Practice has proved that the more frequent the pruning during the rainy season, the more serious the disease. In addition, pruning tools should be disinfected well.

6. Chemical control

In northern regions, spraying can begin in late June, about once every 10 days, until the end of the rainy season in September. The agents can be 50% mancozeb wettable powder at 500 times dilution, 40% Daifudan at 400 times dilution, 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder at 1000 times dilution, and 50% carbendazim wettable powder at 1000 times dilution.
