Sand pear has thin skin, snow-white flesh, and fruit that is fine and crisp with a sweet, refreshing taste and high nutritional value. At present, the planting area is expanding year by year, and in sand pear cultivation, bagging is a very important step. Below is a detailed explanation of the key technical points of bagging sand pears.

1. Selection of sand pear fruit bags

Fruit bags can be divided into plastic bags and paper bags according to material, and their quality directly affects the bagging effect. Therefore, choose fruit bags that have a certain scale of production, reliable quality, a relatively high market share, and good local application results. The size and type of fruit bag should be determined according to the variety. Generally, for a single fruit weight of 250-350 grams, the fruit bag size should preferably be 15×19.5 cm; for an average single fruit weight of 250-350 grams, the fruit bag size should preferably be 15×19.5 cm; for an average single fruit weight of about 400-550 grams, the fruit bag size should be 20×23 cm.

For sand pears, generally choose double-layer paper bags that are yellow on the outside, black on the inside, plus red paper. At present, apart from imported high-quality fruit paper bags, China is already able to independently produce specialized bags of excellent quality for different types of fruit.

2. Timing of sand pear bagging

The scientific bagging time is determined according to various factors such as fruit tree variety, tree age, tree vigor, and phenological period. At the same time, it is also necessary to grasp that the bagging time during the day should be when the morning dew has already dried and the fruit does not have water droplets or pesticide droplets adhering to it. Generally, it is carried out from 9:00 to 12:00 and from 15:00 to 19:00, avoiding the strong midday sunlight period and rainy days.

The best bagging period for sand pears is 15-45 days, carried out after fruit thinning and before the appearance of russet spots on the fruit. Bagging too early in the young fruit stage will affect the development of the fruit, while bagging too late will result in later peel color change, poorer appearance and color, pores turning into fruit spots, and the surface of the cuticle being prone to cracking.

3. Bagging method for sand pears

2-3 days before bagging, in addition to necessary preparatory work, the fruit trees should also be thinned according to load capacity; the fruit trees should also be sprayed with an appropriate amount of fungicide, acaricide, and foliar fertilizer; the fruit bags should also be moistened and softened by spraying a small amount of water at the bag opening, then placing the whole bundle in a moist place or wrapping it in a single layer of newspaper and burying it in wet soil to moisten the bag body, so that the fruit bags become damp and flexible.

After selecting the young fruit, carefully remove the petals and other debris attached to the young fruit. Hold the paper bag with the left hand, open the bag opening with the right hand, or blow open the bag opening with the mouth, so that the bag body expands and the ventilation and drainage holes at the two bottom corners of the bag open. Hold the bag opening 2-3 cm from the lower part, with the bag opening facing upward or downward, and insert the fruit. After putting the fruit in, place the fruit stalk at the base of the bag opening (do not put leaves and branches into the bag), then fold the bag opening at the cut from both sides in sequence in a “folding fan” manner, tie the binding wire tightly at the folded part of the bag opening, tear open from the connection point above the wire opening, turn the binding wire back 90 degrees, rotate it once around the bag opening to tie it tightly, so that the young fruit is in the center of the bag body, suspended inside the bag, to prevent the bag body from rubbing the fruit surface. Do not wrap the binding wire around the fruit stalk.

In addition, when bagging, the following points should also be noted: first, the bagging order is from top to bottom and from inside to outside, to prevent knocking off fruit; second, when bagging, the direction of force should always be upward, so as not to pull off the young fruit, and the force should be light, trying not to touch the young fruit; third, strictly select young fruit with a regular shape, tightly closed calyx, and good development; fourth, the bag opening should be tied tightly, to prevent pests from crawling into the bag to harm the fruit and to prevent the paper bag from being blown off by the wind; fifth, because fruit bags are coated with pesticides and wax during production, hands should be washed promptly after operation to prevent poisoning.

4. Timing and method of bag removal after bagging sand pears

The timing of bag removal for fruit trees varies greatly depending on the bagged tree species, variety, and bagging type. For yellow-green varieties with single-layer bags, the bags can be removed at harvest, or they may not be removed.

The suitable time for bag removal during the day is 9:00-11:00 in the morning and 3:00-5:00 in the afternoon. When removing paper bags on the south side in the morning, be sure to avoid the time of strongest midday sunlight, so that the fruit does not suffer sunburn. On cloudy days, it can be done all day. Grapes may be harvested without bag removal, or the bags may be removed about 10 days before harvest.
