Wood ash is mostly the ash from firewood and grass burned in rural household earthen stoves, and it can be seen everywhere in our daily lives. So, is it good to apply wood ash to fruit trees in early spring?

1. Introduction to wood ash

Wood ash is mainly a potassium fertilizer, and it also contains relatively high amounts of calcium and phosphorus, as well as trace elements such as magnesium, sulfur, boron, zinc, aluminum, and copper. It does not contain nitrogen or organic matter. Therefore, applying wood ash to fruit trees can indeed provide them with a variety of trace elements and prevent the occurrence of nutrient deficiency disorders in fruit trees. As a result, wood ash serves as a main source of potassium fertilizer and is used on fruit trees.

2. Is it good to apply wood ash to fruit trees in early spring?

In fact, applying wood ash to fruit trees in early spring has benefits, but there are also points that need attention.

1. Benefits of applying wood ash to fruit trees

(1) Controlling powdery mildew

For fruit trees affected by powdery mildew, dig a ring-shaped trench 10-20 cm deep at a distance of 15 cm from the plant, apply 10-20 kg of wood ash into the trench, and cover it with a thin layer of soil.

(2) Controlling rust fruit disease

For apple trees that already have the disease, dig a ring-shaped trench about 50 cm from the root crown, 50 cm wide and 60 cm deep, then apply wood ash as a base fertilizer into the trench, water thoroughly, and cover it with newly moved soil on top.

(3) Controlling root rot

Wood ash is very effective at controlling root rot in fruit trees such as pear, peach, and hawthorn. The method is to first dig open the soil around the roots of the fruit tree, remove the soil around the rotten roots, scrape off the diseased root bark, air-dry for 24 hours, then cover each plant with 2.5-5 kg of fresh wood ash, and finally cover with soil.

(4) Controlling aphids

Soak 10 kg of wood ash in 50 kg of water for 48 hours, take the filtrate and spray it, which can effectively control aphids on fruit trees.

(5) Controlling damping-off and anthracnose

For diseased trees at the seedling stage, broadcast wood ash along the rows, with a dosage of 30-50 kg per mu.

(6) Controlling early defoliation disease of fruit trees

Soak 8 kg of wood ash in 100 kg of water for 48 hours and filter it to make an extract. Mix this liquid with a fungicide and spray it, which has a certain controlling effect on early defoliation disease of apples.

(7) Promoting seed germination of fruit trees

After sowing fruit tree seeds, covering the seeds with wood ash can increase the seed germination rate, produce uniform seedlings, promote robust growth, and increase the rate of seedling survival.

(8) Promoting early rooting of fruit trees

When transplanting seedlings, use wood ash together with organic fertilizer as a base fertilizer, or add 5%-10% wood ash when preparing nutrient soil, which can increase available nutrients, promote root development, and reduce pests and diseases.

2. Precautions for applying wood ash to fruit trees

(1) Use it as much as possible in orchards lacking potassium fertilizer

Although wood ash is easy to obtain, its sources are limited, so to truly bring out the value of wood ash, use it as much as possible in orchards lacking potassium, such as orchards with coarse-textured sandy soil.

(2) It is best used in acidic soil

Wood ash is an alkaline fertilizer. When applied to acidic soil, it can not only regulate soil pH and reduce the content of active iron and aluminum in the soil and promote the release of phosphorus, but also create good environmental conditions for the growth of fruit trees and the activity of microorganisms.

(3) It must not be mixed with superphosphate for application

Wood ash contains relatively high amounts of calcium, and mixing the two for application will cause a reaction, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the phosphate fertilizer.

(4) It must not be applied on saline-alkali land

Applying wood ash on saline-alkali land will worsen the degree of salinity and alkalinity.
