Sichuan pepper is an indispensable ingredient in hot pot these days. Everyone loves it. So with such a huge market prospect for Sichuan pepper, do you know the planting methods for Sichuan pepper? Below, let the Tuliu website editor walk you through them.

Planting Methods for Sichuan Pepper Trees

1. Choosing the planting site.

Although the Sichuan pepper tree is relatively small and its root system is rather shallow, it has very strong adaptability and does not have high requirements for the soil. However, clay, wind gaps, and rocky areas are not suitable for planting.

2. Sowing Sichuan pepper seeds

Open furrows in the prepared seedling bed, with a furrow spacing of 20 to 25 cm, a depth of 4 to 5 cm, and a furrow width of 8 to 9 cm. Keep the furrow bottom level, scatter the seeds evenly into the furrows, and cover them with soil. After the following spring, check for germination. When a small number of seeds break through the soil, scrape off the upper layer of soil, leaving 3 to 4 cm of soil covering. When the seed emergence rate exceeds 80 percent, scrape the soil again, leaving 1 to 2 cm. The sowing rate is 5 to 6 kg per mu. The sowing date should be before the soil freezes, usually from mid-October to early November. After harvesting from mid-August to early September, seeds can be collected in time and sown immediately after collection.

3. Planting density

When planting Sichuan pepper, be careful to keep it somewhat sparse and not too dense. Before planting, plan the planting location first, then dig planting holes according to a row spacing of about 2.3 m and a plant spacing of about 1.6 m. Normally, 200 Sichuan pepper seedlings can be planted per mu. The depth of the holes should be determined according to the length of the seedlings. After digging, first take out the deep soil and mix it with some farmyard manure, then fill this soil back into the hole and press it firm with your foot. Then place the seedling into the hole for planting, fill the soil back into the hole, and bury the roots.

4. Proper pruning

The tips of the main branches and side branches of the Sichuan pepper tree should be cut back every year, and in the end only 5-7 main branches need to be retained. It is best to prune after harvest and before the following year's bud break.

5. Management during the seedling stage of Sichuan pepper

Autumn-sown Sichuan pepper seedlings take a relatively long time to emerge, and the seedlings emerge earlier than those sown in spring. Therefore, in dry areas or where the seedbed soil is sticky, the seeds can be covered with mulch or wheat straw after sowing. When dry, water can be sprayed, but the plants must not be flooded, and the seedbed should often be kept moist. When the seedlings grow to 3 to 4 cm high, there will be 3 to 4 true leaves at the time of transplanting.
