How to Grow Cilantro at Home? A Detailed Guide to Home Cultivation Methods
Cilantro is an indispensable seasoning vegetable in people's daily diet. But the market price is still rather expensive, so how should you grow cilantro at home?
1. Preparing the planting container
To grow cilantro at home, you can choose a flower pot with holes or a foam box, and select the container size according to your planting area. Then fill the container with loose, fertile soil rich in organic matter.
2. Sowing and raising seedlings
For growing cilantro, broadcast sowing is preferable; after the seedlings emerge from broadcast sowing, the seedlings can cover the bed surface, reducing water evaporation and lowering the surface temperature. The method is to scatter the seeds evenly, cover with 2 cm of soil after sowing, then gently press down with your foot.
3. Water and fertilizer management
In the early stage of cilantro growth, the temperature is relatively low; in principle, do not water unless the soil is dry, water less in the early stage and slightly more in the later stage, with the aim of keeping the soil moist. When the seedlings grow to 10 cm, the plants grow vigorously, so water frequently and lightly to keep the soil surface moist; at the same time, apply quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer 1-2 times, applying 10-15 kg per mu each time; you can also apply foliar fertilizer about 20 days before harvest, using urea made into a 1.5% solution, spraying once every 7 days, for 2 consecutive sprays.
4. Pest and disease control
(1) Powdery mildew
Control methods:
① Select and breed powdery mildew-resistant varieties, and strengthen temperature and humidity management in the greenhouse.
② After harvest, promptly remove diseased plant residues to reduce overwintering sources of the pathogen.
③ In the early stage of the disease, you can use the dust method or the smoke method. In the evening, spray 10% Duobai dust; light it with a smoldering fire and fumigate overnight.
(2) Sclerotinia rot
Disinfect the soil with 40% quintozene plus a small amount of fine soil, mix well, and apply it to the soil. In short, throughout the entire growing period of cilantro, ventilation should be strengthened to reduce humidity and lessen the occurrence of diseases.
(3) Leaf blight and spot blight
Preventive measures focus mainly on seed disinfection; the method is to soak the seeds in a 500-fold solution of “Captan” or “Carbendazim” for 10-15 min, rinse clean, then sow. Usually pay attention to ventilation and moisture removal; when disease is found, promptly spray for control, using a 600-800-fold Carbendazim solution, a 600-fold mancozeb solution, a 70% methyl
thiophanate 800-1000-fold solution, or a 500-fold chlorothalonil solution; mixing two or more of these gives better results.
However, the above is growing cilantro from a rather professional angle. If you do not have too many demands on the quality of the cilantro, there is no need to be too particular; just pay attention to watering and fertilizing.
