Houttuynia cordata, also called zhe'ergen, is a cold dish that everyone in Guizhou cannot do without, and it is also one of the most common traditional Chinese medicines. Houttuynia cordata has considerable medicinal value and economic value. So what are the planting methods for Houttuynia cordata? Next, the editor of Tuliu.com will explain it to everyone properly.

I. Planting methods

1. Division

Division planting is generally done during the period from the last third of March to the first ten days of April. Dig out divisions from the mother plant that has divisions and transplant them onto a seedbed or sandy soil that we have prepared in advance, or they can also be planted directly in flower pots

2. Cuttage

That is, cut long, healthy and strong branches from the mother plant. Do this in summer. Choose long, healthy and strong branches with nodes, cut off about 14 cm, and insert them into flower pots, or insert them in the field at a spacing of about 10 cm between plants and about 16 cm between rows.

  3. Rhizome propagation

Rhizome propagation means choosing the white, robust roots newly grown from old plants that are free of disease. Because the rhizomes of Houttuynia cordata are usually long strips with many other branches on them, we cut them into small sections of equal size with two or more nodes or rootlets, open furrows in the field and plant them. After they grow and the seedlings succeed, we can choose to transplant and set the seedlings.

II. Growing conditions

1. Although Houttuynia cordata has very strong vitality, if we want high yield, we must care for it according to its suitable planting methods. First, the planting site should be chosen as flat land in Xiangyang. First apply a layer of decomposed fertilizer or organic fertilizer on it, deeply plow it into the field, and then expose it to the sun for several days for sterilization treatment

2. After finishing, use a hoe and a fine rake to do a little fine plowing, break up the large clods of soil, then use the fine rake to level the ground, and then dig a shallow, narrow drainage ditch around the garden, leaving field ridges of suitable width in suitable positions to facilitate our daily management work in the future.

III. Field management

1. After planting the seeds in the field, in order to ensure that they survive better, we should water once each in the morning and evening every day, and just keep the ridge soil moist often

2. Then if weeds are found, they should be cut down in time to avoid affecting the normal growth of the seedlings. When they survive and begin to earth up, apply a round of organic fertilizer together with the earthing up, and then water once with a sufficient amount of water.

3. Generally, if Houttuynia cordata is planted in spring, it can be harvested in autumn. After harvesting, apply another round of fertilizer to help the next harvest or help supply nutrients for overwintering, and then pile another layer of soil at the base of the aboveground plants to help keep them warm during overwintering, or directly lay a layer of thick plastic film, but pay attention to air permeability

4. During its growth process, it is inevitable to encounter a situation where buds and branches grow densely and abundantly. At this time, pruning should be carried out in time, and the excess bud cores should be pinched off. Do not let Houttuynia cordata grow too tall; just let it grow more side branches.

IV. Harvesting and processing

After Houttuynia cordata is successfully planted, when its seedlings grow to about 8 cm to 10 cm, its tender leaves can be picked. The harvest cycle for tender leaves is relatively long; generally a batch can be harvested in more than ten days. The picked tender leaves can be dried and sold on the market, or directly sold fresh on the market. The underground stems must mature and initially have medicinal properties only after they survive for half a year, and can be dug and harvested at the right time according to market demand. After washing off the soil and removing impurities, they can be dried in the sun or pickled before being sold on the market.
