What are the high-yield and pollution-free cultivation methods for cucumbers?
Cucumber is a vegetable we often love to eat, and sometimes we even love to eat it raw. So since eating it raw is an option, we will be even more careful to choose pollution-free ones. So how can cucumbers be grown both safely and with high yield? Follow the editor of Tuliu.com to take a look below~
1. Soil selection
Cucumbers like moisture but are not tolerant of waterlogging, and they like fertilizer but are not tolerant of excessive fertilizer, so fertile soil rich in organic matter should be selected. Usually soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.2 is preferred, but a pH of 6.5 is best.
2. Temperature regulation
The suitable growing temperature for cucumbers is between 15°C and 32°C. They like a warm environment. They are not very cold-tolerant. The minimum is 15°C. The most suitable temperature difference between day and night is 10 to 15°C. At 35°C, cucumber photosynthesis is poor; at 45°C, it has a high-temperature barrier; and from -2°C to 0°C, it will freeze. If cold-hardened at the seedling stage, it can withstand a low temperature of 3°C.
3. Light intensity
South China varieties are more sensitive to short-day conditions, while North China varieties have higher requirements for sunshine duration. They have become neutral plants with respect to sunlight, with a light saturation point of 55,000 lux and a light compensation point of 1,500 lux. They grow well under short-day conditions of 8 to 11 hours.
4. Water and fertilizer management
Cucumbers have high yields and a large water requirement. The suitable soil moisture is 60% to 90%. During the seedling stage, water should not be excessive, and soil moisture should be 60% to 70%. During the fruiting period, sufficient water must be provided, and soil moisture should be 80% to 90%. The suitable relative humidity for cucumbers is 60% to 90%. If the relative humidity of the air is too high, it easily causes disease, leading to reduced yield.
