Jaboticaba is also called the tree grape. Its nutritional value and ornamental value are both very high, and in recent years many people have introduced and planted it. So, what propagation methods does jaboticaba have? Come and learn about them!

1. Seed propagation

Seed propagation is currently the most commonly used method for jaboticaba. Under normal circumstances, each fruit contains one seed. The seeds vary in size and are mostly embryonic. The germination rate of the seeds is closely related to how fresh they are; the fresher they are, the higher the germination rate. Therefore, we should sow them as soon as possible after harvesting. First, crush the fruit to remove the seeds. After about two days, the pulp gradually rots. Then rinse the pulp and mucus off the surface of the seeds with clean water and they are ready for sowing. If they need to be stored, place them in a plastic bag after harvesting the fruit and keep them refrigerated at a temperature below 6 degrees. When the sowing time comes, take the seeds out, treat them and sow them. The storage time can be extended to 2 months. After sowing, they will germinate in about one month; if the temperature is low, germination will be slower.

2. Grafting propagation

Jaboticaba has a relatively long growth cycle and generally needs about 7 years before it begins to bear fruit. However, using the grafting propagation method can advance the fruiting time of jaboticaba. With careful management after grafting, it generally begins to bear fruit in 3-4 years. The specific method is as follows: first, select trees within 2 years old as the grafting rootstock, then select branches about 1-2 years old from a fruiting mother tree as the grafting scion. The grafting time should generally be chosen in seasons with lower temperatures, such as autumn and winter, when the survival rate of grafting will be greatly improved. In spring and summer, due to the weather, the survival rate of grafting is very low, so everyone must pay attention to the grafting time when grafting.

3. Cutting propagation

Cutting propagation can also be used for propagating jaboticaba. Generally, in mid-May each year, select branches with 2-3 nodes and about 5 leaves, soak them for disinfection, then choose peat soil as the cutting nutrient soil; the rooting rate can reach 90%. You can also use cuttings about 10 cm long, with no more than 5 leaves on each cutting. After disinfection, insert them into a medium of mixed mud and sand, which can also promote rooting of the cuttings. However, because the cutting propagation process is too troublesome and the rooting survival rate is relatively low, it is not recommended that everyone use the cutting propagation method when propagating.
