When do chrysanthemums usually bloom? Grow them this way to extend the flowering period!
Chrysanthemum, also known as Jinying, Shouke, Taoju and so on, is one of the three famous flowers of China. It is relatively common in parks, residential compounds and roadsides in our country. Because it blooms in many beautiful colors and many types can be used as medicinal herbs or brewed as tea, it is deeply loved by people. So when do chrysanthemums usually bloom? How do you grow them to extend the flowering period?
I. Introduction to chrysanthemums:
1. What types of chrysanthemums are there?
There are many types of chrysanthemums. According to flowering period, they can be divided into summer chrysanthemums, autumn chrysanthemums and cold chrysanthemums; according to flower stem, they can be divided into small chrysanthemums, medium chrysanthemums and large chrysanthemums; according to color, they can be divided into red chrysanthemums, white chrysanthemums, purple chrysanthemums, pink chrysanthemums, bicolor chrysanthemums and so on.
2. What do chrysanthemums represent?
Chrysanthemum varieties are diverse, and each type represents a different meaning. For example, white chrysanthemums represent respect for the deceased; red chrysanthemums represent passion, vitality, health, hope and love; black chrysanthemums represent steadiness and seriousness; yellow chrysanthemums represent gentleness, nobility and wealth; green chrysanthemums represent health, nature, harmony and freshness. So when giving chrysanthemums to others, never give them carelessly.
II. When do chrysanthemums usually bloom?
There are many types of chrysanthemums, and because each type grows in different environments, the flowering time varies. The flowering times of various chrysanthemums are as follows:
1. Summer chrysanthemum flowering time: generally blooms once each in May and September, and when blooming it can last about one month. But if cared for properly, the flowers can be enjoyed for more than 1 month.
2. Autumn chrysanthemum flowering time: generally blooms from September to November, and when blooming it has many colors such as red, white, yellow, bicolor and pink, and is very beautiful.
3. Cold chrysanthemum flowering time: generally blooms from December to January of the following year, usually lasting about 35 days. If managed well, the flowering period may be enjoyed for 1 month, though this situation rarely occurs.
4. Late chrysanthemum flowering time: generally blooms from October to November, but if the climate or temperature changes, the flowering time may be later, though at the latest it will still bloom in November.
5. Wild chrysanthemum flowering time: generally blooms from June to November, and can bloom for about 2 to 3 months.
6. Red chrysanthemum flowering time: generally blooms from July to October. If managed well, it may bloom in June.
III. How do you grow chrysanthemums to extend the flowering period?
Under normal circumstances, the flowering period of various chrysanthemums can last about 20 to 35 days. But if growing conditions such as light and temperature are well controlled, the flowering period can also be extended. Here, taking autumn chrysanthemums as an example, the specific methods for extension are as follows:
Method 1: Give eight hours of light each day. Under normal circumstances, autumn chrysanthemums have a relatively short light period. Sometimes there is no light for several days, and sometimes there is light all day. So if eight hours of light are given each day for two consecutive months, then when autumn chrysanthemums bloom, the flowering period will be extended to one month.
Method 2: Keep the temperature at 0 to 5 degrees. Under normal circumstances, autumn chrysanthemums grow best at 18 to 21 degrees, and grow best at 15 degrees during the flower bud stage. If the temperature is kept at 0 to 5 degrees for a period of time, the flowering period can be extended to one month. However, this temperature must be well controlled, so that it does not sometimes get too high and sometimes too low, which would affect flowering.
Method 3: Remove the flower center. After autumn chrysanthemums grow for a period of time, they will grow very tall, and as the flower center gradually grows, the nutrients of the branches will gradually become insufficient. So the flower center can be removed in late August or early September to ensure that the branches have sufficient nutrients. In that way, the chrysanthemums will bloom two months later, and the flowering period can be extended by more than ten days. If pinching is done earlier, the flowering time will be earlier.
Overall, chrysanthemums can bloom at any time, depending on which type they are. But if you want to extend the flowering period, you can do so by controlling light, temperature or pinching, and in that way it can be extended by up to one month.
