From August each year to April of the following year, the brightly colored roses bloom in succession, and as a widely cultivated horticultural variety, what tree can a tree rose be grafted onto? Grafting timing and technique and other questions are also things many growers need to be clear about.

I. Basic facts about roses

1. Origin and distribution of roses

Rose generally refers to the rose flower, an evergreen or semi-evergreen low shrub, also called yueyuehong, yueyuehua, changchunhua, sijihua, shengchun, dandanhong, douxuehong and so on, and is known as the “queen of flowers”. As a flower variety native to our country, the rose is mainly distributed in the mountainous areas of Hubei, Sichuan and Gansu provinces, and is planted most abundantly in cities such as Shanghai, Nanjing, Nanyang, Changzhou, Tianjin, Zhengzhou and Beijing.

2. The value of roses

The rose has beautiful flower forms, rich colors and a long flowering period, and is an ornamental flower. Moreover, rose flowers are inexpensive and not difficult to cultivate, and can be grown in courtyards, gardens or as potted plants; roses can also be used as flower hedges, and have effects such as purifying the air, reducing noise pollution and alleviating the greenhouse effect; in addition, rose flowers can be used to extract fragrance, and the roots, leaves and flowers can all be used as medicine, having the effects of activating blood and reducing swelling, and reducing inflammation and detoxifying, and are also a good gynecological remedy.

3. Rose varieties

At present there are nearly ten thousand rose varieties in the world, among which the main ones are edible roses, climbing roses (CI series), large-flowered fragrant roses (cut roses are mainly large-flowered fragrant roses) (HT series), floribunda roses (polyantha roses) (F/FI series), miniature roses (Min series), tree roses, grandiflora roses (Gr series), shrub roses (sh series), ground-cover roses (Gc series) and so on. Flower colors include white, red, yellow, blue, orange, green, pink, black-red and bicolor, etc.

II. What tree can a tree rose be grafted onto?

Generally, sapling grafting uses closely related trees, and since roses belong to the Rosaceae family, roses can be grafted onto wild roses, Rosa multiflora 'Carnea', Rosa multiflora var. cathayensis and so on. In addition, when grafting, be sure to choose rootstock with strong adaptability and robust growth for the graft, so that while increasing the survival rate, it can ensure a better form of the rose tree later on.

III. Grafting timing and technique for tree roses

1. Rose grafting timing

We can generally carry out grafting operations from April to October, and it should not be too early or too late. In spring, grafting should not be too early, because if the temperature is too low the wound is hard to heal. In autumn, grafting should not be too late, also because low temperatures affect growth, and grafting is also not suitable during the rainy season.

2. Rose grafting technique

(1) Generally, rootstock varieties such as Rosa multiflora 'Carnea' and Rosa multiflora var. cathayensis can be chosen. Use large rootstock more than 2 years old, requiring vigorous growth, a well-developed root system and no pests or diseases. After cutting back flat before winter, wait for several thick branches to sprout the following year to use for grafting.

(2) For rose grafting, choose varieties with relatively slender, supple branches as the scion, such as floribunda roses and repeat-flowering roses. When grafting, be sure to graft varieties with consistent growth vigor onto the same tree, so that it is not only convenient for pruning and controlling flowering, but also makes the flowers bloom better and the flowering period longer.

(3) After cultivating the required rootstock, choose rose varieties with strong growth and good upright habit as the scion. In autumn, bud-graft at the base of the strong rootstock, and in the following spring cut the top to promote upright growth of the grafted bud. At the same time, cut off the sprouts emerging from the rootstock. When the upright branch grows to more than 1.5 m, carry out a second grafting at a height of 1 m. After it survives, remove buds and prune as described above to promote branching. In this way a good tree crown is formed.

The above is the full introduction to rose grafting. Friends who like roses can try grafting or planting them themselves.
