The pitcher plant has an organ shaped like a pitcher that can prey on insects; besides that, it can be used for ornamental purposes, to admire its peculiar insect-catching organ, and it can also be used as medicine. If you want to grow a pitcher plant, you can sow it from seeds, so how do you plant pitcher plant seeds? How much does a potted one cost per pot?

1. How do you plant pitcher plant seeds?

The seeds of the pitcher plant are very small and slender, spindle-shaped to thread-like, about 1cm long and about 1mm wide, woody, with a tiny raised embryo in the middle; its seeds are very light and easily carried away by the wind, and they do not stay viable for long either. After one or two months their germination rate drops substantially.

1. Soil

For growing pitcher plants, loose, fertile and airy leaf mold or peat soil is best. For potting, a mixed substrate of peat soil, sphagnum moss, charcoal and fir bark shavings is commonly used; you can also use a mix of coconut husk, wood shavings and perlite, or grow it in pure sphagnum moss mixed with peat.

2. Flower pot

The pitcher plant is a perennial plant and will grow very large, so it needs a stable growing environment; it is also a vine, so it needs a support frame. To set up the support, a fairly large pot is needed, which can not only hold more growing substrate but also give the roots more room to spread.

3. Sowing

The substrate for growing pitcher plants must be kept moist, then scatter the seeds evenly over the substrate, seal the pot opening with plastic wrap and poke a few holes in it, and keep it in a bright place, without direct sunlight; they sprout in about one month, and are transplanted in about half a year to a year.

4. Care

(1) Temperature: the suitable growing temperature for pitcher plants is 25-30°C, 21-30°C from March to September, and 18-24°C from September to March of the following year. In winter the temperature should not be lower than 16°C; below 15°C the plant stops growing, and below 10°C the leaf edges suffer frost damage.

(2) Light: pitcher plants need ample light. Under strong direct sunlight in summer, shading is essential, otherwise the leaves are easily scorched, which directly affects the development of the leaf pitchers. They should not be kept in dark conditions for long periods, lest the leaf pitchers form slowly and small, with dull colors on the pitcher surface.

(3) Humidity: pitcher plants can only grow and develop normally under high humidity. During the growing season they need frequent spraying, 4-5 times a day. If the temperature varies greatly or it is too dry, the formation of leaf pitchers will be affected. The growing substrate needs to stay moist at all times, ideally loose enough that no water can be squeezed out.

(4) Nutrition: pitcher plants are insectivorous plants, and when cultivated they do not need to be specially fed insects, as they can catch insects on their own; in addition, it is not recommended to feed insects to young or newly transplanted pitcher plants, and a fast-dissolving foliar fertilizer should be sprayed instead.

(5) Diseases: pitcher plants are prone to leaf spot, root rot, sunscald and so on, with leaf spot and root rot being the more serious. For leaf spot, spray a 10% antifungal agent at 1000 times dilution; for root rot, spray 50% chlorothalonil wettable powder at 900 times dilution.

2. How much does a potted pitcher plant cost per pot?

1. Pitcher plants can be made into potted plants, mainly to admire their peculiar insect-catching organ. Prices vary with size; according to information provided by Alibaba and Baidu Aicaigou, potted pitcher plants cost 6-15 yuan per pot, and the specific price is subject to the local market.

2. Pitcher plants are generally used as potted plants or hanging baskets for viewing. They can be placed in places where flies and insects easily enter, such as windows and balconies, or hung under trees or beside corridors; they are not recommended for the bedroom, because their flowers give off a rather unpleasant smell at night, and after eating insects they also give off a putrid odor.

The above is an introduction to the seed-planting method and potted prices for pitcher plants. We hope it is useful to everyone.
