I. Basic facts about sweet corn

1. Distribution of sweet corn

Sweet corn is a type of corn, also called vegetable corn, and is a category of culinary corn. It is one of the main vegetables in developed countries such as Europe and the United States, South Korea and Japan, and it is planted in most regions of our country.

2. The value of sweet corn

Corn kernels are rich in vitamins, protein, trace elements and more. Regular consumption has the functions of lowering blood pressure, preventing cancer, detoxifying, delaying aging, lowering serum cholesterol, and preventing skin lesions; moreover, sweet corn also has medical and health benefits. Because it contains a variety of vitamins and minerals, it has the characteristics of both fruit and vegetables; it contains unsaturated fatty acids, which help lower cholesterol in the blood, soften blood vessels, and prevent and treat coronary heart disease.

3. Corn planting subsidies

At the National Two Sessions, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Han Changfu stated that this year producer subsidies will be given to corn and soybean producers. The corn planting subsidy will continue to be implemented. In addition, in 2019, Heilongjiang Province will continue to implement the producer subsidy policy for corn and soybeans, appropriately raising the corn producer subsidy standard on the basis of the previous year. The soybean producer subsidy will be more than 200 yuan per mu higher than the corn producer subsidy, with the soybean producer subsidy at about 300 yuan per mu.

The specific subsidy standard will be determined by Heilongjiang Province in an overall manner based on factors such as the total amount of corn and soybean producer subsidy funds allocated by the state and the legal actual planting area of corn and soybeans.

II. How much profit can you make growing sweet corn on one mu of land?

1. Sweet corn can generally be planted for 2-3 crops in the south. For example, Datian County in Fujian can plant 3 crops of corn in spring, summer and autumn, and the cost of each crop of corn is 630-710 yuan per mu.

2. The purchase price of sweet corn is 1-1.4 yuan per jin. The total income over a year is 8,900-9,200 yuan, and the net profit after deducting costs is about 6,900-7,200 yuan.

III. Sweet corn planting time and techniques

Sweet corn has wide adaptability and high planting returns, and is deeply loved by consumers. But to obtain better returns, the planting time and techniques are something you must be clear about.

1. Sweet corn planting time

For sweet corn planting, it is best to choose varieties with broad market demand, high yield and good quality, and strong resistance. Sow in mid-to-late March in spring, or before early July in autumn. Sweet corn planted this way can reach a yield of more than 2,000 jin per mu.

2. Sweet corn planting techniques

(1) Choose fertile vegetable garden land for corn seedling raising. Use 40 trays with 100 holes each per mu and lay them flat on the prepared seedbed. For early spring seedling raising, cover with agricultural film to keep warm; for summer and autumn seedling raising, cover with a shade net to protect from sun and preserve moisture. After the seedlings have 2 leaves, remove the shade net.

(2) Transplant the successfully raised corn seedlings to paddy-upland fields with high soil fertility and convenient drainage and irrigation, and the paddy-upland fields used for planting must be plots that have been finely prepared and given sufficient base fertilizer.

(3) Spray herbicide on the surface before the corn seedlings are planted. When the seedlings have 4 leaves, they can be planted in a directed manner (the leaves should be perpendicular to the rows). After planting, water thoroughly to ensure a full stand of seedlings. In addition, maintain a density of 80 cm between wide rows, 50 cm between narrow rows, and 25-30 cm between plants.

(4) During the corn growing period, irrigate in dry conditions to maintain soil water-holding capacity at 70%, and irrigate once with running water during the flowering period; apply seedling-promoting fertilizer after planting, and when 8-9 true leaves have grown, apply jointing fertilizer and foliar fertilizer together with intertillage and weeding. Then apply grain-filling fertilizer as appropriate.

(5) In addition, pay attention to preventing and controlling pests and diseases such as cutworms, mole crickets, green caterpillars and corn northern and southern leaf blight. Choose different pesticides according to the actual situation, but remember that the use of pesticides is prohibited 20 days before harvest.

Sweet corn has a wide range of uses and a good price trend, and there are also subsidies for planting it, so choosing this project is still quite good. Growers should always pay attention to market changes and not blindly expand planting or reduce production.
