Pumpkins are grown in many areas of China. Sometimes pumpkins produce many flowers but simply never set fruit, and the yield is not very high. Yet some people grow pumpkins that are big, sweet and high-yielding. Below is an introduction to planting knowledge: high-yield planting methods for pumpkins!

1. Site selection and land preparation

Pumpkins have relatively strong drought tolerance, but their water requirements are quite strict: there must not be too much water. So when choosing a site, pay attention to selecting land with a relatively high terrain and good drainage and irrigation. Do not plant in soil that easily accumulates water or from which water drains poorly. When preparing the land, pay attention to deep ploughing as much as possible, and spread farmyard manure as a base fertilizer to ensure the soil fertility is sufficient to supply the growth of the pumpkins;

2. Sowing methods

There are two ways to sow pumpkins. The first is direct sowing: in the prepared field, at a certain spacing, place 3-5 seeds in each hole, then cover the seeds with soil. The second way is the transplanting method: first raise the seedlings in one plot until the seedlings grow to 5-10cm, then they can be transplanted. After transplanting, be sure to remember to water until they grow new roots;

3. Sowing technique

The high-yield technique for pumpkins generally uses the method of joining multiple plants together. That is, when the pumpkin seedlings grow to about 50-60cm, use a knife to cut off the tips of the main shoots of two adjacent seedlings, then bind the two seedlings whose tips have been cut off tightly together. Usually after 2-3 days the joint will grow new shoots. When the new shoots again grow to 50-60cm, join the shoots again, and so on. At the same time, excess vines should be removed promptly;

4. Field management

When the seedlings grow to 2m, promptly remove the tops of the vines, so that they will grow more vines, which helps increase the yield. You can also build some trellises and guide the seedlings onto the trellises to grow along them. This can also avoid damage to the vines from rain and reduce pests and diseases, increasing the probability of setting fruit. The more important points of field management are as follows. The first is fertilizing; the time for fertilizing is generally after planting is finished and when the vines grow to about 20cm. The second is pollination; to increase the fruit-setting rate, we use artificial pollination. The third is vine pressing; vine pressing generally waits until after the first batch of pumpkins has set fruit and part of the vines have turned yellow, so that new vines will grow and continue the life of the plant, thereby increasing the yield;

5. Disease prevention

Pumpkins usually have relatively few diseases. The most common is powdery mildew, but its harm is very great: it directly affects the growth of pumpkins and leads to poor quality. So it should be treated promptly. Generally, spray 2000-fold dilute triadimefon emulsifiable concentrate, 200-fold dilute agricultural antibiotic 120 aqueous solution, or spray 1500-fold dilute thiram.
