I. Development prospects of taro.

Taro is a perennial herbaceous leguminous crop with spherical tubers. Taro is rich in nutrients and widely used. It is a rare and precious crop that combines vegetable, staple food and medicinal food uses. Its tubers contain 38.20% starch, 15.2% crude fiber, 2.63% crude protein, 4.29% reducing sugar, and contain vitamins, trace elements and amino acids. It can help digestion, clear heat and detoxify, strengthen the spleen and stomach, and nourish the body. It can enhance the body's immune function, increase resistance to disease, and can prevent colon cancer.

The tubers of taro can be eaten steamed or stewed, with a unique taste, and can also be processed into taro flour, taro slices, etc. Every year, large quantities of taro processed products are exported from China to Japan, South Korea and other Southeast Asian countries and regions. Taro is suitable for cultivation in most provinces and regions of China, basically has no pests or diseases, and requires little fertilizer and pesticide. It is a high-quality, low-input, pollution-free, highly nutritious, high-benefit precious vegetable with good market opportunities and broad development prospects.

II. Field management techniques for taro

1. Intertillage and weeding: after the seedlings emerge completely, carry out the first shallow hoeing, then intertill and weed about once every 10 days until the rows close. After the rows close, weeds can be pulled by hand to keep the field soil loose and free of weeds.

2. Water and fertilizer management: before sowing, water thoroughly as a base watering, applied by spraying in 2 rounds. During the entire seedling emergence period, the soil should be kept moist; if drought is found, furrow irrigation can be used for infiltration, but the water layer must not exceed the bed surface, which helps ensure full stands. After emergence, appropriately control moisture to promote robust root growth and prevent lodging. During the stem and leaf growth period, keep the field moist to promote vigorous stem and leaf growth. Apply fertilizer together with watering, generally applying 10-15 kg of urea per mu, or 15-20 kg of ammonium bicarbonate.
