The strawberry is a common and delicious fruit, hailed as the “queen of fruits”, rich in nutritional value, sweet and tasty, and eating strawberries regularly also helps promote digestion. So, what conditions are needed to grow strawberries? Let's learn about them together!

1. Soil

Strawberries are not very demanding about soil, but their roots are shallow, so when planting you should choose a sandy soil that holds water well, is deep and loose, and ensure the soil is well aerated, keeping the soil pH slightly acidic. Strawberries should not be planted in overly clayey or waterlogged soil, and strawberries have relatively high nutritional requirements. Insufficient nutrients will greatly affect strawberry growth, not only hindering flower bud differentiation but also causing a drop in yield and poor fruit quality. Therefore, you must ensure the soil has sufficient fertility, apply enough base fertilizer before planting, and improve soil fertility to ensure healthy strawberry growth.

2. Temperature

Strawberries can adapt fairly quickly to temperature changes and are quite cold-tolerant. During the dormant period they can withstand low temperatures of around minus 10 degrees without dying, and the above-ground plants can withstand around 4 degrees. However, being in a low-temperature environment for a long time will lower the flowering and fruiting rate of strawberries, causing a drop in yield, so we still need to control the temperature well. During the ripening period, strawberries need the temperature kept at around 23 degrees, and the root growth temperature should be maintained at around 18 degrees. Below 15 degrees, growth will be somewhat restricted, but the temperature must not be too high either, as too high a temperature easily weakens plant vigor and can even lead to death.

3. Water

Strawberry roots are not deep, with a distribution depth of no more than 20 cm, so their water demand is relatively high. During the growing process, you must ensure there is sufficient water, keeping the soil moist during the seedling stage. A lack of water will affect strawberry growth, weaken plant vigor, and increase the chance of pests and diseases. During the fruiting period, water promptly; sufficient water can promote fruit development, raise yield, and enhance strawberry quality. However, there should not be too much water, as excess water easily causes root rot and fruit rot, and in severe cases when there is too much water the plant dies. Therefore, when watering too much or during long periods of rainy weather, pay attention to drainage.

4. Light

The strawberry is a light-loving fruit, yet it has a very strong shade tolerance, though growth will be somewhat affected. Light intensity and duration have a great influence on strawberry growth. When there is sufficient light, strawberry plants are robust, the fruit size is moderate, the color is deep, and the quality is good. When there is insufficient light, although they can still grow normally, their flowering and fruiting rate will drop noticeably. Therefore, during cultivation you must ensure sufficient light for strawberry growth, but strawberry plants should not be kept under direct sunlight for long periods, to avoid sunburn.

The above is an introduction to the growing conditions for strawberries, and we hope it can help all growers!
