How to Prevent and Control Pests and Diseases Affecting Chrysanthemums
Plum, bamboo, orchid and chrysanthemum have been beloved flowers since ancient times. Nowadays, quite a few people grow chrysanthemums too. But chrysanthemums are prone to pests and diseases. This gives many people quite a headache. Below, the Tuliu.com editor will walk you through the growing habits of chrysanthemums and their pest and disease control~
I. The Growing Habits of Chrysanthemums
1. The biological characteristics of chrysanthemums are: fairly strong cold tolerance, heavy feeding, fond of water but requiring good drainage with no waterlogging. They like ample sunlight, but during the height of summer they should not be exposed to scorching sun around midday.
2. Suitable temperature range: the perennial roots can withstand -30 degrees, while the above-ground parts will suffer cold damage to flowers and leaves when temperatures drop below -1 degree. The flowering period is divided into early, middle and late types.
II. Pest and Disease Control for Chrysanthemums
1. Pests
Mainly spider mites and aphids, which gather on tender shoot tips and suck sap, causing poor development and deformity of the shoots. For spider mites, use 40% omethoate 1000x solution, or 80% dichlorvos 1000x solution, or 40% dicofol 1000-1500x solution. For aphids: use 10% fenvalerate 3000x solution or 50% menazon emulsifiable concentrate 1000x solution + Leduoshou seaweed acid spray; 40% omethoate 1500-3000x solution, 25% amidithion 1000x solution, and 50% menazon emulsion 1500x solution are all effective.
2. Diseases
(1) Leaf blight: in the early stages of the disease, spray with 70% thiophanate-methyl 1000x or 50% carbendazim wettable powder 800x + Leduoshou seaweed acid
(2) Fusarium wilt: in the early stages, drench the roots with 50% carbendazim 1000x solution + Leduoshou seaweed acid for control.
(3) Downy mildew: for seedlings, soak in 25% metalaxyl wettable powder 600-800x + Leduoshou seaweed acid for 10 minutes before planting as a preventive measure; in the early stages of the disease, use a mixture of 25% metalaxyl wettable powder and 50% carbendazim 800x solution + Leduoshou seaweed acid.
(4) Leaf spot: once diseased leaves are found, remove and destroy them promptly, and spray 65% zineb wettable powder 500x solution, or 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder 500x solution, or 10% Bordeaux mixture once every 7-10 days. 3-4 consecutive applications will bring the disease under control. Alternatively, spraying 50% thiophanate 1000x solution or 50% carbendazim 500x solution before the disease occurs also gives good control results.
