What season should bowl lotus be planted in, and what is the hydroponic method like?
The scientific name of the bowl lotus is actually the lotus, only it is a relatively small type of lotus, and we generally call it pot lotus or table lotus. The bowl lotus has elegant, subtle flower colors and rather many petals, and its leaves are round and can float on the water surface. Nowadays many people grow bowl lotus hydroponically in their home courtyards or indoors as decoration, which is very elegant. So what season is bowl lotus generally planted in? What is the hydroponic method like?
1. What season is bowl lotus generally planted in?
Generally speaking, March to May each year is relatively suitable for planting bowl lotus, but bowl lotus seeds have no dormant period, and if the temperature is right, they can be planted in any month, so no matter the season, everyone can enjoy the beauty of the bowl lotus.
However, before planting the bowl lotus, you must first treat the seeds, because their shell is very hard, and treating them in advance can increase the germination rate. One end of a bowl lotus seed is rather pointed and the other end is rather round, so you only need to grind through the round end.
Note that when doing this, try not to damage the seed embryo inside, and do not remove the seed shell, otherwise rotting is likely to occur.
2. What is the hydroponic method for bowl lotus like?
1. Preparatory work before hydroponics
Before hydroponically growing bowl lotus, the preparatory work must be done thoroughly. In addition to treating the seeds, the seeds must be soaked to promote germination. Place the treated seeds with cracked shells in warm water, or you can simply soak them in water and put them in the sun, which can also achieve the goal. Generally, the water should be changed twice a day, and they will sprout in about a week.
The temperature of the soaking water here is generally between 20 and 40°C. If the temperature is too high, although they sprout quickly, later growth is restricted. If the temperature is too low, the seeds will sprout very, very slowly.
2. Prepare the substrate
Although it is hydroponic, fine sand is still needed for anchoring, so as to ensure stability and prevent it from flowing with the water.
3. Choose a suitable growing container
Generally speaking, the container for hydroponic bowl lotus can be chosen according to your own preference. Ceramic pots, glass pots, purple clay jars, and plastic containers are all fine; as long as you like it, you decide how to choose. Of course, if you want to save trouble, you can just go to a flower shop and buy professional equipment, the kind with a partition, with the bowl lotus on top and nutrient solution below.
4. Buy nutrient solution
If hydroponic bowl lotus is to grow well, you must buy nutrient solution, because there is no soil to provide nutrients. Of course, if you know how to prepare it yourself with inorganic fertilizers, then you do not need to buy extra.
Nutrient solution should not be used too frequently either; generally once a week is enough, and if the bowl lotus grows slowly, you can appropriately increase it according to the actual situation.
5. Temperature and light
Hydroponic bowl lotus is best placed in a relatively warm place, so that it blooms more beautifully. Of course, do not expose it to the blazing sun either; if the light is too strong, shade it appropriately to avoid wilting from sun exposure.
