Nanguo pear is a specialty of Liaoning, a fruit variety that can only be grown in its unique iron-rich soil, and it has the reputation of being the “king of pears”. So, what cultivation techniques does the Nanguo pear require? Let's find out together!

1. Seedling selection and orchard establishment

Before establishing an orchard, we must first select good pear seedlings. The selection of pear seedlings is very important for the growth and yield of the pear trees. We should choose virus-free and pest-free seedlings with high, stable yield and strong growth, then select a plot with deep, loose, fertile soil and a low incidence of pests and diseases for planting. Deep plow and cultivate it, apply fertilizer and disinfect it to improve soil fertility and safety. When applying base fertilizer, control the amount of fertilizer according to the orchard area to prevent excessive fertilizer from causing fertilizer damage to the pear seedlings.

2. Timely planting

After the orchard is established, choose a suitable time for planting. First, control the planting density well and dig the planting holes properly. When planting, mix fertilizer with straw appropriately and spread it into the planting holes, then plant the pear seedlings and backfill the soil. When backfilling, pat the soil firm, and the roots should be slightly above the ground level. When planting, pay attention to the depth of the planting holes: it should be neither too high nor too low, as either will affect the rooting and growth of the seedlings to some extent. Also do a good job of planting management to ensure the survival rate of the young trees.

3. Post-planting management

After planting, we should bag the trunks to prevent pest damage. The main purpose is to protect the growth of the main and lateral branches of the seedlings and improve the survival rate. When the young trees begin to sprout, remove the bags in time. After planting, keep the soil moist and water thoroughly to set the roots, and water about once every 5 days or so, though the watering frequency can be appropriately extended over time. After watering, do a good job of earthing up to prevent water loss. When the new shoots grow to about 8 cm, make a soil basin around the trunk to prepare for watering in the middle and later stages.

4. Field management

When growing Nanguo pears, we should regularly cultivate and weed to prevent weeds from competing with the Nanguo pear for nutrients and to create a good growing environment for it. Because the Nanguo pear has a relatively long growth cycle, we should do a good job of topdressing during cultivation, pay attention to the nutrient ratio and amount in the fertilizer, appropriately apply fertilizer outside the roots and spray foliar fertilizer to ensure the healthy growth of the Nanguo pear. Then, according to the growth of the Nanguo pear tree, prune and shape it appropriately to improve the tree's ventilation and light penetration, promote the growth of branches in the inner canopy, and prevent flowering and fruiting from being affected.

The above are the cultivation techniques for Nanguo pears. We hope growers can learn more from them.
