Differences Between Thalia and Pickerelweed and How to Grow Them from Seed
Thalia, also known as water bamboo taro, Thalia, or water lotus banana, is a greenhouse flower introduced from abroad and is fairly common in southern China. The flower stalks of Thalia are very tall, and the flowers it produces are purple and elongated in shape. It generally grows in paddy fields, rivers, ponds and other places, and patches of Thalia swaying with the water waves are very beautiful. Thalia and pickerelweed are very similar. Today let us take a look at where the differences between Thalia and pickerelweed lie and how to grow them from seed.
1. Where do the differences between Thalia and pickerelweed lie?
1. Different places of introduction
The place of origin of Thalia is Mexico and the southern United States;
The place of origin of pickerelweed is North America, and it is often used in waterscape construction.
2. Different growing environments
Thalia is not cold-tolerant and likes to grow in warm, humid environments. If you want to grow it, it must be placed in a spot with fairly abundant sunlight, and attention must be paid to temperature changes.
Pickerelweed must grow in a warm environment. If the temperature is below 18°C, it will stop growing.
3. Different flower forms
The flowers of Thalia are fairly small, the flower color is purple, and the entire stem is covered with a layer of white powder;
The flowers of pickerelweed are also fairly small, but they look more enchanting, and a single pickerelweed plant can produce about a hundred small flowers.
2. How do you grow Thalia from seed?
1. Sowing time for Thalia seeds
The sowing time for Thalia seeds is very important. Generally, if you want Thalia to grow well and bloom well, sowing in spring is fairly suitable.
This is because the temperature, air humidity, rainfall and so on in this season are suitable for its growth. Of course, it can also be sown in autumn, but overwintering must be taken into account, making care a little more difficult.
2. Choosing Thalia seeds
Seed selection is also very important. We should choose seeds with fairly plump grains, no mildew, and no damage or scars on the outer skin. In this way, the germination rate of the planted Thalia seeds will be somewhat higher, and subsequent growth will also be somewhat better.
3. Sowing methods
(1) For sowing Thalia, choose soil that is fertile, loose, well-drained and highly breathable, and plant it on flat ground in a spot with fairly abundant sunlight if possible.
A certain amount of base fertilizer should be added to the soil, and a certain amount of water should be poured to maintain the soil's moisture so as to promote seedling emergence.
(2) Dig a small hole every 2cm, then scatter in the seeds and do the earthing-up work well.
(3) Decide the number of waterings and the amount of water according to the dry or wet condition of the soil. It must not be too dry or have too much standing water; both conditions are unfavorable to its growth.
Note: In addition to maintaining fertile, moist soil conditions, air humidity also needs to be maintained. Especially when it is fairly dry, water can be sprayed on the leaf surface.
Finally, it should be reminded that temperature is also very important when Thalia seeds are growing. If the temperature is too low, Thalia will stop growing, so when growing flowers normally, the low twenties to 30°C is fairly suitable.
