2. What soilless cultivation techniques are currently used for celery?

In the past, we planted celery in soil, either in open fields or in greenhouses, but with the development of cultivation techniques, soilless cultivation techniques for celery have also been vigorously promoted. Below, we introduce them one by one.

1. Celery is generally sown in early August, planted from early September to early October, and harvested around January. Methods such as NFT, DFT, rock wool cultivation, or other substrate cultivation can be used. Celery grown with soilless cultivation not only has low cost but also good results.

2. To grow celery using soilless cultivation, the ground needs to be leveled and the soil layer compacted to make a trough about 20cm deep, 60-100cm wide, and about 10m long. The trough runs north-south, with a slope drop of 1:70 and a trough spacing of 30cm. Line it with a layer of 0.1mm thick polyethylene film and fill it with substrates such as rock wool, vermiculite, or river sand. After the seedlings are established, plant them at a spacing of 10cm between plants and rows (for western celery, the spacing is 20cm×30cm), planting one seedling per hole, with 40,000-50,000 plants per planting. Supply the nutrient solution promptly after planting; generally no seedling recovery period is needed.

3. Although celery is grown using soilless cultivation techniques, temperature control is still very important. Generally, the suitable daytime temperature should be kept at 18-25°C, and at night 12-15°C. The nutrient solution temperature should be 18-20°C. Moreover, the amount and frequency of nutrient solution supplied differ at different growth stages. During the peak growth period, supply the solution 2-3 times per day (drip irrigation or pouring), and it can be appropriately reduced in the early and late stages. If the nutrient solution is not recycled, clean water needs to be poured once every few days.

4. In addition, during the planting process, attention should be paid to the damage caused by celery early blight (leaf spot disease), which is generally more severe under cold and humid conditions. Prevention should be done in advance by selecting disease-resistant celery varieties and strengthening fertilizer and water management; if it occurs in the early stage of the disease, promptly remove the diseased leaves and spray with chemicals.

The above is the complete introduction to celery prices and soilless cultivation techniques. When planting, pay special attention to the amount and frequency of nutrient solution supply, as this is one of the key factors for celery growth.
