Causes of Deformed Strawberry Fruit and How to Solve Them
Everyone says: “This is a world that judges by looks”, and it is not just people - the plant world is the same way. Among common fruits, those with high “appearance value” tend to be more popular on the market. Among common fruits, the strawberry’s “appearance value” is relatively high. Strawberry fruit is usually obovate or diamond-shaped, but when farmers grow strawberries, deformed[jī] fruit occasionally appears, and the deformed appearance has an obvious effect on price. So, how can the incidence of deformed strawberry fruit be reduced?
First we need to figure out why deformed fruit occurs. The main cause of this situation is incomplete or uneven pollination and fertilization, which leads to uneven strawberry development and irregular shape. In addition, during the process of strawberry flower bud differentiation, aggregate fruit or extra-large fruit will form; if this fruit lacks calcium, it will also develop poorly.
In response to the causes, fruit growers can try the following 4 measures.
One, choose strawberry varieties with strong pollen germination ability.
Two, keep the temperature at around 27 degrees and the humidity at around 40%. This makes it easier for pollen to disperse and for the fruit to develop better.
Three, use artificial supplementary pollination to ensure even pollination.
Four, strictly limit pesticide spraying. If spraying is necessary, also choose a time with fewer flowers and apply pesticides with relatively low toxicity.
The above are the 4 methods to reduce the occurrence of deformed fruit. I hope the strawberries grown by fruit growers all have good “appearance value”.
