How to regrow enoki mushrooms from their base, and how many times can you harvest them?
Enoki mushrooms (Flammulina velutipes) are a common edible fungus with a delicious taste and rich nutrition. When we eat them, we often cut off the base and throw it away, but some people say the base can be regrown. Here we share the method for regrowing enoki mushrooms from their base.
1. Method for regrowing enoki mushrooms from their base
1. Cut off the base: choose ones at the market with a relatively intact base, and it is even better if a little soil is still attached. Then cut off the harder, darker part of the base. If the base is darker in color or harder, you can cut off that part; if the enoki mushrooms are relatively hard, cut off more.
2. Prepare a container: choose a suitable container about 10cm tall, then put two or three spoonfuls of baking soda into the container. If you do not have baking soda, you can use edible alkali instead. Add an appropriate amount of water, with the water level about half the height of the root system, and stir well. Then place a few wet paper towels at the bottom of the container. Alternatively, prepare a plastic bag with a piece of paper towel inside, and wet the paper towel with soda water.
3. Place the base: put the cut-off enoki mushroom base on the wet paper towel in the container, then seal the container with plastic wrap and place it in a cool, ventilated environment; or put the cut-off base on a paper towel wet with soda water, then place it in a plastic bag, seal it well, and place it in a dark place where sunlight cannot reach at all.
4. Wait for regrowth: enoki mushrooms are a fungus and have a very strong regenerative ability; as long as the environment is suitable, they can grow quickly. We provide them with a humid and alkaline environment, keep the temperature at around 5-10 degrees, and they can grow on their own. They will sprout in about a week, and in about 2 weeks you can harvest a new batch of enoki mushrooms.
2. How many times can enoki mushrooms be harvested?
1. Enoki mushrooms reproduce by fungi, and their regenerative ability is very strong. As long as there is a source of nutrients, they can keep reproducing. After cutting, they will grow a new crop again, and unlike plants, they will not stop growing after being harvested a few times.
2. If you want enoki mushrooms to keep reproducing, you must ensure sufficient nutrients. If there is no water left, add water, and also add baking soda to adjust the alkaline environment. Pay attention to temperature and keep it at around 5-10 degrees; avoid high temperatures. Pay attention to light; they like a dark, cool environment, so avoid environments with strong light.
3. Enoki mushrooms can be harvested about every two weeks. After harvesting, there is enough for one or two meals. After harvesting, they continue to grow a new crop, and after two weeks you can harvest another batch. In this way, you do not have to eat them every day, but rather have one or two meals every half a month, so you do not get tired of eating them.
Summary: the base of enoki mushrooms is very useful, so do not throw it away. You can regrow it according to the method above, and its regenerative ability is very strong. As long as there are sufficient nutrients, it can keep regrowing, so you do not have to spend money to buy more at the supermarket.
