Camellia, also known as the camellia flower, is one of China's top ten famous flowers, with brilliantly colored blooms, and is a well-known horticultural variety. So, what are the taboos of growing camellias? Let's find out together!

1. Exposure to blazing sun

Camellias like a hot, humid growing environment, but they are averse to blazing sun and direct sunlight. If exposed to blazing sun, the leaves and flower buds will be damaged, so we must adjust our growing methods according to the different seasons. When growing camellias in summer, they must be shaded; in late spring and early autumn, they should be moved onto the balcony to get sun so they can develop well.

2. Growing in alkaline soil

Soil is indispensable for planting camellias, and most of the nutrients camellias get as they grow come from the soil, so the importance of soil to camellia growth is self-evident. Camellias like acidic soil, so when planting, choose a fertile acidic soil with good drainage as much as possible. If alkaline soil is used, or if the soil is too heavy and sticky, it will have a harmful effect on the growth and development of camellias.

3. Low temperatures

In fact, most camellia varieties are fairly tolerant of low temperatures, and in southern China they can overwinter outdoors directly. But if the temperature drops below -10°C, you must do a good job of keeping camellias warm and protected from the cold. Otherwise, at such extreme temperatures, no matter how cold-hardy a plant is, it will run into problems from the freezing. If growing them outdoors, set up a greenhouse for insulation; if growing them indoors, raise the room temperature.

4. Watering with alkaline water

Camellias like an acidic environment. Besides the growing soil needing to be acidic, it is best if the water used for watering is also slightly acidic. Camellias have a large demand for water and need timely replenishment of moisture. If the water in your home is on the alkaline side, then after long-term watering an alkalization phenomenon is bound to appear, and gradually the plant will turn yellow and wither or grow poorly. Therefore, during watering we can add some edible vinegar to the water, mixing in 8% edible vinegar each time for watering, and this can avoid the alkalization situation.

5. Poor ventilation

Any plant will run into problems in an environment with poor ventilation. Only in an environment with suitable ventilation and temperature can it grow quickly. If growing them indoors, place them as much as possible in a room with good north-south airflow, and try to maintain a relatively well-ventilated state.

The above are the taboos of growing camellias. Hope this can help you!
