II. Key points for planting ginkgo trees
1. Planting techniques
(1) Choice of planting environment and site. The ginkgo tree is a warmth-loving, sun-loving species, so it is suitable for planting in soil or sandy soil with ample light, a deep soil layer, fairly loose texture, fertile soil and sufficient moisture. Because the ginkgo tree grows slowly and lives long, when used in landscaping a site should be chosen that has higher ground, convenient transport and good drainage. Since the ginkgo tree adapts strongly to the external environment, some acid or alkaline soils can also be planted with ginkgo trees after certain modifications.
(2) Planting techniques. Before planting, a ginkgo tree should undergo simple shaping and pruning without affecting its original tree form. When planting a ginkgo tree there are also certain requirements for the planting hole: if the tree comes with a soil ball, the hole should be about 80 cm larger than the diameter of the soil ball of the ginkgo being planted; if the tree has no soil ball, the hole should be about 50 cm larger than the diameter of the root system of the ginkgo being planted. When planting trees, for a ginkgo with a soil ball, the tree should be held upright and aligned, and fine soil should be firmed around the soil ball, with the depth preferably covering more than 10 cm above the surface of the soil ball; for a ginkgo without a soil ball, the root system should be ensured to spread naturally in the hole, then the tree should be held upright and aligned and firmed with fine soil, with the depth preferably covering more than 10 cm above the root crown with soil.
2. Management measures
(1) Watering. After planting a ginkgo tree, attention should be paid to watering; the first watering is a deep root watering and must be thorough, and if there is a water shortage, water thoroughly once every 5 d. Once the ginkgo has established, it does not need frequent watering; in northern regions, water once after the thaw and before the trees bud; in June, when the weather is dry, which is the peak growth period of the ginkgo year, water once; the second peak growth period of the ginkgo year is in late August, when it can be watered once more.
(2) Fertilizing. The best seasons for fertilizing are generally spring and summer; dig a trench beside the tree, mix the fertilizer evenly with the topsoil and fill it in. If a lot of fertilizer is applied in spring, once a year is enough; otherwise, apply fertilizer once more in late August.
(3) Pruning. As an ornamental tree, the ginkgo must be pruned appropriately and promptly to keep it attractive. When pruning in winter, cut off dead branches, thin branches, overlapping branches, upright branches and diseased or pest-infested branches; after pruning, to prevent moisture loss, paint is usually applied to the cut surfaces.
(4) Cold protection and warmth. In northern winters, straw rope is usually wrapped around the trees, and old newspapers are used inside the straw rope to wrap the trees for cold protection. Nowadays, as more and more new materials appear, colors that match the tree's environment can be chosen for the cold-protection wrapping. Trees can also be kept warm by whitewashing the trunks; this method generally uses salt-added lime water or lime-sulfur mixture to whitewash the trunk in autumn, and at the same time uses the principle of reflection to reduce the trunk's absorption of solar radiation, lowering the day-night temperature difference of the trunk so the tree will not freeze, and this method can also remove some pests that damage the trees.
