When caring for orchids, you must pay attention to four points: first, repot once every 2-3 years; second, use a clay pot with a large bottom hole and deep basin filled with fertile soil rich in a large amount of humus; third, when fertilizing, be sure to apply diluted decomposed fertilizer, and water according to the principle of watering when dry and stopping when wet; fourth, place them outdoors in spring, summer and autumn, and in a shaded spot in summer.

What are the precautions for orchid cultivation?

1. Light and temperature for orchid cultivation

Orchids prefer shade and are afraid of direct sunlight. However, we cannot keep them in a dark place for a long time. This will cause poor plant growth and even few or no flowers. Therefore, appropriate light is very necessary. If we grow orchids indoors on a windowsill flower stand or on a table, we need to rotate the flower pot at intervals to avoid the plant growing lopsided to one side due to its phototropism.

The suitable temperature for orchid growth is roughly similar during the growing season (that is, from late spring to early autumn), — generally 20-30°C (it differs among different species and different developmental stages), with a nighttime temperature of 16-22°C, and the diurnal temperature difference is best at around 6°C.

2. Pruning techniques for orchids

Giving orchids proper pruning can make their ornamental effect better. When pruning, we generally cut off some dead branches and fallen leaves, freeing up more space for new branches to grow, and at the same time it can also enhance the plant's ventilation conditions. The pruning of branches and leaves affected by pests and diseases also needs to be handled promptly, so as to prevent other branches and leaves from being infected.

3. Common diseases of orchids

Ant nests commonly appear in the soil of orchids. At this time, we only need to fill a bucket with water and put the flower pot in to soak, and they can be removed. For orchid white silk disease and brown rust, we can use 0.5% lime sulfur mixture for treatment. In addition, whiteflies, red spider mites, scale insects, etc. are all common pests harmful to orchids, and flower lovers can buy specialized chemicals on the market, or use common household items and foods such as vinegar, brown sugar, and laundry detergent to prepare the chemicals themselves.

Among flower species, orchids are considered relatively delicate and difficult plants to grow, so they must be looked after during cultivation; only in this way can they have lush flowers and leaves.
