How to plant Yugoslavian Snow Lotus Root seeds
Yugoslavian Snow Lotus Root is the highest-yielding lotus root in the world, with the highest starch and sugar content of any lotus root worldwide, and it has thin skin, is crisp and sweet, and can be eaten raw like a fruit. Many people want to grow it. Below is an introduction to planting Yugoslavian Snow Lotus Root from seeds.
1. Selecting lotus root seeds: In March-April, when spring temperatures rise to 12°C, dig up the seed lotus roots from the seed-preservation field and select seed lotus roots that match the characteristics of this variety and are robust in growth and free of pests and diseases.
2. Cutting lotus root tips: Use a sharp knife to cut off the lotus root tips together with 1 cm of the basal node, then after washing, select tips with plump terminal buds and no damage as propagation material. Each mu requires 500-550 lotus root tips.
3. Seedling-raising site: Choose a paddy field that is loose, fertile, sheltered from wind and facing the sun, with good water retention and convenient irrigation and drainage, as the seedling-raising site. Before winter, apply sufficient farmyard manure, plow deeply and let the soil clods weather, irrigate in spring, plow and harrow level, and open furrows to form beds at a width of 2 m, with a bed width of 1.5 m and a furrow width of 0.5 m and depth of 0.2 m.
4. Inserting lotus root tips: Cover the bed surface with plastic film, then make openings in the film at a row spacing of 10-15 cm and a plant spacing of 5-10 cm, and insert the basal node of the lotus root tip into the mud with the terminal bud facing up. The depth should be such that the node is buried in the mud and the terminal bud is slightly exposed above the mud surface. After insertion, build a small arched shed and cover it with film to keep warm.
5. Field management: Keep the seedbed temperature above 15°C, maintain a shallow layer of water on the bed surface, and prevent high temperatures from scorching the seedlings. When 2-3 small leaves have grown from the top of the lotus root tips, they can be transplanted to the lotus root field.
