Soilless cultivation of toon sprouts should be carried out in an industrial building, with the temperature controlled at 15-30 degrees, the cultivation containers generally being lightweight plastic vegetable seedling trays, and the varieties mainly being the red toon series with high purity, cleanliness and germination rate and large seeds; moderate light intensity is required, and the sprouts can be harvested when the seedlings reach 8-12 cm in height. The following introduces the soilless cultivation techniques for toon sprouts.

1. Seed selection and soaking

Select the red toon series varieties with high purity, cleanliness and germination rate and large seeds. After sun-drying and cleaning, soak the seeds in clean water at 18—25℃ for 12—24 hours, then place them in a warm place at 20—23℃ to promote germination, covering them with a moisture-retaining cloth and spraying water to ensure suitable humidity for the seeds.

2. Control of light and temperature

Toon seedlings need moderate light intensity. The suitable growth temperature is 20—23℃, not lower than 15℃ at the minimum and not higher than 30℃ at the maximum. At the suitable temperature, the production cycle is 15—18 days. Frequent light watering is the basic principle for replenishing water during sprout growth. Generally, spray 2—3 times a day using micro-sprinkler facilities or plant protection sprayers, with the amount of water controlled so that the substrate in the seedling tray is moist without heavy dripping.

3. Disease prevention management

Incomplete cleaning of seedling trays, poor seed quality, and unsuitable temperature and humidity can lead to seed mildew and root rot. Prevention and control measures should mainly target the causes with corresponding measures, and the use of chemical pesticides should be avoided.
