How many Paris polyphylla plants are suitable to plant per mu of land?
Plant 15,000-17,000 Paris polyphylla seedlings per mu. Transplant at a plant-to-row spacing of 15×625cm, open furrows horizontally across the bed surface, with a furrow depth of 4-150cm, place the seedlings according to the planting specifications, and be sure to place the apical bud tip upward, cover the previous furrow with the soil from digging the second furrow, and so on. After sowing, cover the bed surface with pine needles or rice straw, with a thickness that does not expose the soil, to provide insulation, retain moisture and prevent weeds. After planting, water thoroughly once to settle the roots, and thereafter water according to soil moisture conditions to keep the soil moist.
Conditions for growing Paris polyphylla:
1. Geographical environment
Wild Paris polyphylla grows in valleys, beside mountain streams, and in shady, damp places under broad-leaved forests at altitudes of 700-1100 m.
2. Soil conditions
Paris polyphylla grows best in slightly acidic humus soil with good permeability or in fertile sandy soil. It cannot grow in alkaline soil or clay soil, and heavy, waterlogged and compacted soil is not suitable for planting.
3. Moisture conditions
Paris polyphylla prefers a cool, shady, damp environment with moderate moisture. It is afraid of both drought and waterlogging. If the soil moisture content is too low, the stems and leaves are prone to losing water and the root system dries out and dies, while if it is too high, pests and diseases are prone to occur and the rhizome rots.
4. Temperature conditions
Paris polyphylla plants are relatively cold-tolerant and suffer no freezing damage at low temperatures. From late February to early March, they can still sprout and grow at a temperature of 5℃, or even at a minimum temperature of 2℃. At temperatures of 1-2℃, no freezing damage occurs to the buds. Generally, the suitable temperature for seed germination, root growth and development, and apical bud germination is 18℃-20℃, for seedling emergence it is 20℃, for aboveground plant growth it is 16℃-20℃, and for underground rhizome growth it is 14℃-18℃.
5. Light conditions
Paris polyphylla is a shade-loving plant that prefers slanted or diffused light and avoids direct strong light. Its growth requires a shaded environment; stronger light will cause the leaves to wither. Generally, the seed germination and seedling stages require relatively good shading, while in the two years before maturity, shading should be appropriately reduced and light increased, which is beneficial to the accumulation of secondary metabolites and dry matter.
