Edible Lily Planting Methods and Key Cultivation Techniques
The lily is a perennial herbaceous bulbous plant with diverse varieties, suitable for ornamental, edible, and medicinal uses, and it is cultivated across a wide range. So, are you clear on what the edible lily planting methods are?
1. Select suitable improved varieties: When choosing seeds, we should first choose improved varieties with good yield, good flavor, and no bitterness; second, check whether the lilies are intact and free of defects; and finally, choose relatively large, plump lilies with pure white color as seeds.
2. Choose suitable soil: Sandy loam soil that is fertile, well-drained, and loose in texture should be chosen for cultivation, so we usually need to prepare the planting site by breaking up large clods of soil and smoothing the soil as level as possible; while preparing the soil, we should also apply enough farmyard manure.
3. Pre-sowing preparation: Before sowing, we need to treat the lily seeds with chemicals, which can prevent many diseases.
4. Sow at the right time: The suitable growing temperature is between 18-28°C. Because the growth and development period of lilies planted in different regions may vary in length, it is best to decide based on the actual local temperature. For example, in the Hunan region, the suitable time for lily planting is around August to September, but during the cold winter season, warmth measures should also be taken.
5. Reasonable topdressing: Topdressing is a key point throughout the lily's growth process, and a total of three topdressings are needed during growth. The first topdressing is after emergence in February to March; the second topdressing should wait until May, when the lily seedlings have grown to about 12 cm, at which time mainly phosphorus fertilizer and organic fertilizer with a high microbial content are used, and an appropriate amount of potassium fertilizer is sprayed on the leaves; the third topdressing is after harvest.
4. Prevention and control of pests and diseases: The most common pests and diseases during the growth period of edible lilies are viral diseases, aphids, and so on, and a large part of these problems is caused by improper water management. Generally, if there is too much water in the field, pests and diseases are very likely to be triggered, and once symptoms are found, we should carry out chemical treatment in time.
5. Harvest at the right time: After the Beginning of Autumn, when the lily stems turn yellow and die and the flowers fall off, it is the suitable harvest period. Harvesting should be done on sunny days. After digging out the bulbs, cut off the aboveground parts and immediately transport them indoors to store buried in clean river sand to prevent discoloration and shriveling.
