Tomato Planting Time and Methods: When Is the Best Time to Plant

General News By Sophie Bennett 0 views
1. Tomato Planting Time. The planting time for spring tomatoes is from February to May, autumn-winter cropping is generally planted from July to September, and winter-spring cropping is planted from November to February of the following year. Tomato planting methods are relatively simple. Before planting, soak the seeds in warm water. After seed treatment, sow them in a seedbed. When the seedlings grow two or three true leaves, they can be transplanted. Before transplanting, apply sufficient base fertilizer to the cultivation site, and basically no fertilization is needed afterward.

2. Tomato Planting Methods

1. Seed Treatment

First soak the seeds in clean water for one to two hours, then place the seeds in warm water at 50-60 degrees, stirring constantly to prevent the seeds from being scalded. When the water temperature drops, add water to raise the temperature, maintaining the whole process for about 15 minutes, then continue soaking the seeds for 3-5 hours before sowing.

2. Sowing and Transplanting

After seed treatment, sow in a seedbed. Sowing should not be too dense; about 30 grams of seeds per sq m is optimal. Keep the soil moist, with the temperature between 22-28 degrees, and sprouting will occur in about 3-4 days. When the seedlings grow two or three true leaves, they can be transplanted. At transplanting, the ground temperature should be stably above 10°C, which is beneficial for root growth and improves the survival rate.

3. Field Management

After transplanting, cultivation should be carried out promptly to promote rapid rooting and seedling recovery. Along with cultivation, loosen the soil and remove weeds. When fertilizing, water immediately to avoid burning the roots. In the rainy season, drainage measures should be taken to prevent excessive water accumulation that could cause root rot. Except for a few upright varieties, all other tomato varieties need to be grown with trellises.
